B. Participants’ Lived Experiences
This section presents the main data of the research based on the interview. The data includes the result of the interview with the three participants. They are
Tiwi as the first participant, Rizka as the second participant, and Apri as the third participant. From the interview, the participants express their experience in
learning English as students who come from family with low financial capacity. The findings are obtained after the process of data analysis on each
student‘s experience in learning English as students come from families with low financial
capacity.
1. The Participants’ Lived Experiences on Language Learning Process
Language learning process refers to the term of communication involving more than one individual within conventional system. The process involves social
activity and collaboration between teacher with students and students with other students. Below are the findings of the interview with each participant.
a. Tiwi
Tiwi is a female student whom the researcher has picked as the first participant in the interview. From the interview, she said that her process of
learning English is dominated by less communicative way. The indicator can be found in her answer that she only has conversation occasionally in several
situations. She also informed that she only does the conversation in Facebook. Meanwhile, she also informed that it is even rarely to use communicative English
in the classroom. The following is what she said during the interview.
R: about your learning process firstly do you often do conversation or communicate in English?
S1: Just occasionally, Sis.
52
R: So… just occasionally…?
S1: only in facebook
…. R: Oo in facebook.
S1: yes… to make us know it better.
R:
hmmm… how about in daily classroom activity? S1: rarely
R: ooo rarely S1
yep, it is cool… to know English. IS114614LLF-LLP and LEF-LO
From the conversation the researcher can find Tiwi‘s experience in using English in facebook occasionally. Meanwhile she also admitted that she rarely uses
English communicatively in her class. These experiences show that Tiwi‘s language learning process is not fully communicative since the classroom activity
rarely involves conversation or communicative English learning activity. Meanwhile, Tiwi said that her goal is being able to speak English. Here is what
she said.
R:
so… your goal is to be able to speak English... to make you easier to find a job and be able to communicate with tourist?
S1: yes … to be able to communicate.
IS114614LLF-LLP
In terms of language learning process, from the conversation can be found that Tiwi has determined her goal in communicative English context.
From the interview Tiwi also said that she seldom has discussion with the teacher and other classmates using English. She said that she is still embarrassed
to use it in the class because of bad pronunciation, and sometime she does not understand the diction. It can be found in the interview.
R:
then… do you accustomed to discuss with your teacher or probably with classmates using English?
S1: with friends yes, I have ever done it …. While, with teacher is just to ask …
right or wrong
… if we make mistake of course we will be corrected by the teacher.
R: ooo. So speaking English is only in the classroom
….
53
S1: yap … I do it when close to a teacher… if too loud I think it will be
embarrassing.
R:
so… speaking with teacher in the classroom… how about with classmates? S1: I have ever done it.. But very seldom.
R: why seldom? S1:
yeah… sometimes because of bad pronunciation and sometimes because i don’t understand the meaning.
IS114614LLF-LLP
The researcher can find that Tiwi speaks English with teachers more frequently than with classmates. This situation shows that the language learning
process involving communicative interaction amongst students has not been established well yet. From the interview, it can be found that there is
representation of the negotiation during the process as seen below.
R: Then, l
et’s say that once upon a time, your teacher asks you to speak English. How do you respond to that situation?
S1: if I know the meaning I will answer or respond, if not I will ask first IS114614LLF-LLP
Furthermore, as the concept of language learning process discussed in this research is closely related to communicative method and approach, the researcher
looks to find out whether the students‘ teaching and learning activity is focusing
on grammar based method or the communicative one. From the interview it can be found that
Tiwi‘s teacher, certain teacher, often prefers to use Bahasa Indonesia
instead of English, while other teacher has introduced communicative method by giving games and quizzes for the class. In addition, Tiwi said that her
English learning activity in the class is more likely to be communicative than just grammar based activity. Below is what Tiwi said about how communicative her
class is.
R: Does your English teacher in school only teach grammar all the time or ask the class to conduct a conversation in English?
54
S1: often with Bahasa Indonesia… it is rare to use English.
R: I mean… the teaching is more on communicative way or only tenses?
S1: Ms. Dinar usually makes a game
for us… explains one and then followed by
game. Ms. Dinar sometime uses game.. Mrs. Maria only explains. If we do more speaking I think it will make us sleepy
R: so you have more communicative teaching than grammar? S1: ya.. Something likes that.
