S1: I pay attention to get the knowledge. R:
hmm yes… IS114614LLF-C
Tiwi also admitted that she rarely takes notes or highlight information on book of the lesson she gets in the class. But she said that she sometimes
underlines or circles some words or information from the book which she does not understand.
R: Do you often make notes or highlight any text in book about the explained
material?
S1: rarely R: oo rarely
S1:
I don’t add anything if I have understood. But if I haven’t understood maybe I need to circle any words.
R: so you are making circles on the text.. And do you underline the important information in the text?
S1: I underline the text if I don’t understand it… to help me study at home

From the conversation, Tiwi realizes that in order to understand deeper on her learning process, she needs to make any kind of highlight to help her
remembering the information or understanding some missing information. However, although Tiwi is conscious about this note-taking and highlighting
technique, she admitted that she rarely does it. It means that she has not had adequate consciousness in using this learning technique to support her self-
learning process. Tiwi added that she prefers to ask her friends to the teacher about
something she does not understand from the lesson because she feels more comfortable. By looking for information with the most comfortable way, Tiwi is
conscious that when discussing or asking information about her English learning,
66 she has to do it in order to really understand the information. Therefore, she
chooses to ask her friends because she still feels hesitant with the teacher. Here is what she said.
R: then, do you ask your teacher until you understand or just stay silent if you
are confused about her explanation?
S1: I usually ask my friends … it is more comfortable for me.
R: that’s it?
S1: yes, if I ask teacher too often sometime she will feel annoyed. IS114614LLF-C
From Tiwi‘s interview result, the researcher finds that she is conscious that her goal in learning English is to be able to use English in communicative way.
Therefore she believes that more practices in speaking English are needed to support her goal. In the other hand, it can be indicated that Tiwi is not yet
prepared for self-learning since she has less experiences on note-taking or highlighting any information from the lesson.
b. Rizka
Rizka agrees that more opportunity and practice to speak English can help the students to develop their English. It is similar to what the first participant said.
It is shown from what she said in the interview.
R: Do you ever think when you are given opportunity to speak English, it means that you have opportunity to increase and practice your English skill? I
mean, it is like you are realizing the situation.
S2: Yes, I do.. R:
so you are conscious on it…? S2:
yes… I think that the teacher knows that we actually can speak… so she gives some opportunities to help us to develop.

67 Similar to Tiwi, from the conversation can be found that Rizka has been conscious
that any conversation or interaction in her learning activity is done purposefully to develop the speaking and communication skill in English.
When the researcher asked about her opinion whether or not the English learning at her school can be useful for real-life condition, she answered that it is
useful, the same as what Tiwi said. Rizka added that speaking should be practiced since she thinks that people speak oral language instead of writing to
communicate. In the interview she said as follows.
R: Do you agree that to be able to use English actively to communicate, we have to practice doing conversation and discussion using English?
S2:
yes…. If people ask of course they will not write it on paper… so we have to practice speaking.
R: I see…
S2: yes, I agree. IS214614LLF-C
From the conversation above, Rizka is conscious that to be able to speak English actively, she has to practice it instead of only writing and learning the grammar.
Rizka also thinks that English learned at this school will be useful for real social living, for example when she is going to tourist object. Here is what she said.
R: Do you think that English learned at this school will be useful for real social living?
