CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter draws conclusions from this research and provides some
suggestions for everyone who is directly connected with the English workbook: writers, publishers, teachers, and also for other researchers.
A. Conclusions
This research discussed a content analysis of English workbooks for seventh grade students of Junior High School. Thus, the purpose of this research was to
evaluate the content of some English workbooks which were used in some Junior High Schools in Yogyakarta. Based on the results obtained from the evaluation, the
following two conclusions were drawn. Firstly, in general, the analysis showed that none of the three workbooks
achieved the standard of a good workbook. Workbook 1, English Material Supplementary, was considered as fair workbook because the achievement was
72.5. Workbook 2, Global which fulfilled 64.7 for all criteria, was considered as sufficient workbook. Besides, Cerah which was Workbook 3, achieved 72.5
fulfilment and thus, was considered as fair workbook. Secondly, the analysis showed that the workbooks only fulfilled few criteria.
Consequently, the workbooks got those achievements. Language Contents aspect in those three workbooks achieved the fewest fulfilments and was considered as poor

90 fulfilment. The most mistakes found in Language Contents criteria were misspelt
words. Based on the researcher’s analysis, these misspelt words came because of mistyping. Other mistakes were about grammar and pronunciation. There were some
inappropriate pronunciation works and grammar mistakes found in those workbooks, even wrong grammar theory about singular and plural nouns in some workbooks.
Other aspects which achieved few fulfilments are General Appearance, Language Skills, and Practice and Testing. The workbooks lacked general information such as
complete and detailed table of contents which could ease the students to know the contents, glossary, complete bibliography, informative information page, and the
workbooks. In some parts, the workbooks used too small font size and inappropriate type of letter. In Language Skills aspect which dealt with four language skills found
that the workbooks did not cover those four skills adequately. The workbooks were very lacking in materials to improve students’ listening skills. Furthermore, in
Practice and Testing aspect, the criteria which were not fulfilled dealt with correct language used, clear direction, and the availability of periodical revisions. These
criteria influence workbooks’ validity which is one of the important aspects in a workbook.
However, other aspects such as Topic Contents, Social and Cultural Contexts, and Teachability were considered as good fulfilment because the workbooks met all
criteria provided. Besides, even though in some aspects such as Objectives and Flexibility also got good fulfilment, these two aspects had weaknesses dealing with
availability of listening skill material as one of the requirements in general objectives,

91 and the information for different levels of formality. In addition, there was one
aspect, Design and Illustration, which had fair fulfilment. That was because the workbooks lacked illustrations that were clear, varied, and attractive and that could
stimulate students’ creativity.
