workbooks as fair workbooks. English teachers may use Workbook 1 but teachers must pay more attention and give correction to misspelt words which frequently
occur, and teachers also provide listening and pronunciation tasks for the students since there is a lack of listening and pronunciation tasks in Workbook 1. The same
case, English teacher may use Workbook 3 either, but teachers must be very careful of grammar mistakes and misspelt words which are frequently found in this
workbook. On the other hand, Workbook 2 has less achievement. After overall calculation, Workbook 2 gets 64.7 fulfilment for all criteria in all aspects. This
gives Workbook 2 sufficient fulfilment as a workbook. There are many requirements for teachers who want to use this workbook. Teachers must give extra attention to
unclear type, illustration, grammar mistakes, and misspelt words. Besides, teachers must provide more listening and pronunciation tasks which are rarely found in
Workbook 2.
B. Description of Criteria Fulfilment
The following explanation is the description based on the evaluation above of how a workbook meets the criteria fulfilment and how it does not.
1. Description of General Appearance Aspect
Workbook 1 had an informative cover. The title, as provided in Figure 4.1, was very clear because it used a simple font type and the font size is big, so that the
reader could clearly recognise the book at a glance and also because the title was typed in darker colour upon lighter background.

The curriculum which was used in Workbook 1 was also stated on the cover. In addition, the cover provided column to write the book owner’s bio data and stated list
of authors. However, the picture used in the cover was not attractive. Based on Sadiman, Sudjarwo, and Radikun 1989: 183, a picture can be categorized as a good
picture if it is able to deliver the message easily. The picture showed many crowded- buildings which were hard to be related with English Figure 4.2. The readers would
not recognise that Workbook 1 was an English book only by seeing the picture.

Generally, Workbook 1 had met the criterion for appropriate font size and type for seventh graders. Simple font types such as Times New Roman, Comic Sans
MS, and Courier New, and legible font size about 11 – 14 are used in this book but in page 8, the size used is too small Figure 4.3. The size used in that text was about 9.

Figure 4.3 English Supplementary Materials: Too Small Font Size
Workbook 1 provided a particular column to show Standard Competence, Basic Competence, and Indicators for seventh graders but there was less information
about the authors and editors, even no information about the publisher. The other aspects which were met are appropriate title to each lesson and complete
bibliography. The title could easily reflect the content of the topic, so the students could predict what they would learn. Further, the readers could find complete
bibliography on the last page. It was clearly stated that the book used 18 references. But there were also the criteria which were not met, such as complete and
detailed table of contents and appropriate glossary. The table of contents was not complete and detailed enough because it just showed the page for main topics. There
was no information for the sub-topic, exercises, or the tests. Furthermore, Workbook 1 had no column for vocabulary enrichment.
In Workbook 2, it used simple font type and the font size was big, but the readers would meet little difficulty in recognizing at a glance because the title was
typed in darker colour upon dark background Figure 4.4.

However, the picture which was used was attractive and the pictures could deliver the message clearly. It showed a Big Ben, a famous building in England, and a woman
who was writing something. With those kinds of pictures, the readers could predict what book it was. The cover also showed the curriculum which was used in
Workbook 2. In addition, the cover provided a column to write the book owner’s bio data and stated list of authors.
Generally, Workbook 2 had met the criterion for appropriate font size and type for seventh graders. Simple types of letter such as Comic Sans MS, Arial, and
Tahoma, and legible font size about 11 – 14 were used in this book, but in page 4, the size used was too small and the type was not appropriate Figure 4.5. The font type
was Vivaldi. Actually the size was 11, but because of the type, the words were illegible.

Figure 4.6 Global: Inappropriate Title
Overall, each topic in Workbook 2 was given an appropriate title which allowed students to acknowledge the material to be discussed; though there was disturbing
title on page 14 Figure 4.6. The material being discussed was Command which was commonly found in signs in the street or public places, but the title given was “Clean
the Blackboard, Please.” Workbook 2 did not provide particular column to show Standard Competence,
Basic Competence, and Indicators for seventh graders and little information about the authors, and no information about the publisher. Other weaknesses were the book had
no glossary for students to enrich their vocabulary, no table of contents which was bothersome for students, and also no bibliography.

For Workbook 3, the title was clear and eye-catching because it used a simple font type with attractive colour. Though the font was not big enough, the pictures
which were used are able to deliver the message. The cover had the picture of the English flag, Big Ben, double-decker bus. Using these pictures, the reader could
clearly recognise the book at a glance Figure 4.7. The curriculum which was used in Workbook 3 was also stated on the cover. In addition, the cover provided a column to
write the book owner’s bio data and stated list of authors. In general, Workbook 3 had met the aspect for appropriate font size and type
for seventh graders. Simple types of letter such as Comic Sans MS, Arial, Century Gothic, and Berlin Sans MS and legible font size about 11 – 14 were used in this
book. Workbook 3 provided particular column to show Standard Competence, Basic Competence, and Indicators for seventh graders and there was information about the
authors, illustrator, distributor, and publisher. Another criterion which was met was complete bibliography on the last page; the book uses 26 references.
But there were also the criteria which were not met, such as complete and detailed table of contents, appropriate title, and appropriate glossary. The table of
contents was not complete and detailed enough because it just showed the main topics in Workbook 3 without showing the page. There was no information for the sub-
topic, exercises, or the tests. Furthermore, the book had one inappropriate title for topic 3 Figure 4.8.

The title was What Do You Do After School, the material should be related to the title, about activities at home but the contents were about family members, occupations,
