The teacher gives each group a topic to be debated. 57 6. The teacher gives the students time to prepare their arguments. 7. The teacher invites each group to come in front and start the debate. 58 REFERENCES Abrams, MH. 1981. A Glossary of Literary Terms. New York: Holt, Rineheart and Winston. Canfor-Dumas, E. 2005. Dumped by his girlfriend Angie, he is in a horrible job with a horrible boss on an internet magazine, ItsTheBusiness.com, teetering on the brink of closure. He meets Geoff on a lunchtime drink in a pub. A beer- drinking, roll-up smoking 53-year-old with a slight pot belly, Geoff is not how Ed pictured a Buddhist since he is a little bit of an alcoholic. He gets Ed to help him unblock the pub lavatory. From that moment on, they become friend. Ed always shares his problems with Geoff and Geoff will give him some suggestions. Problems are just facts, says Geoff. Its our attitude towards them that makes us suffer or not. The strong actually go out seeking challenges. This infuriates Ed. At first Ed fights Geoffs suggestions tooth and claw. Slowly, Ed can accept them. Geoff can show Ed a way out. Its your life state, mate. I told you the second time I met you: if your life conditions low all this negative stuff just appears, like the rocks at low tide. Theyre always there, but when the tides in - when your life condition is high - they disappear. You literally rise above it all... ItsTheBusiness.com goes bankrupt. Ed loses his job and feels so depressed. Geoff suggests him to meet Dora of Personal Personnel, an employment agency, who sets his life goals in order. No longer is Ed blocked like the pubs pipes at the beginning of the novel. He is able to embark on a new career and existence in general, but not instantly. Dora has successfully set a job interview for Ed in the Writers Inc. and he is accepted there. This job does not last long since financial crisis hit the company and they have to let Ed go. He becomes 62 jobless and out of money so that he agree to help Geoff’s friend, Pier, as a garden laborer for three days. On the last day, when Ed is going home, he meets Angie, his ex-girlfriend. Ed is so happy and hopes that he can get her back, but this meeting is ended with arguing. After his job as a garden laborer ends, Ed comes to Dora to get a new job. This time, Ed gets a job at Regence House, where he has to try to rent out an office space. While he is working in Regence House, he accidentally knows the truth that Geoff is a window-cleaner. At first Ed is very angry because Geoff does not tell him about his job but then he can accepts it. One night, Ed gets so drunk so that he cannot work in the next morning. His job is handled by another person who has the ability to work twice as well as Ed and it makes him fired from Regence House. Ed feels so awful facing the reality that he loses his job again. Once again Ed looks for Dora. Dora asks him to meet Liz, a TV producer and he gets a job as a freelance script-reader. The unpredictable thing happens, Geoff dies because of heart-attack. Ed is so sad because of Geoff’s death since he admires Geoff very much. After Geoff’s death, he tries to imitate him. He becomes a Buddhist and changes his life.
