Research Setting RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
32 survey research. Survey is a research technique in which data are gathered by
asking questions of a group of individuals called respondents Ary, Jacobs Razavieh, 2002. Moreover, Cohen, Manion Morrison 2011 say that a survey
has several characteristics and several claimed attractions; typically it is used to scan a wide field of issues, populations and programs. Survey in education often
use test results, self-completion questionnaires and attitude scales Cohen, Manion Morisson, 2011. In this research, the researcher used self-completion
questionnaires as the main data collection. The researcher distributed questionnaires because questionnaires is a useful instrument for gathering factual
information, data on attitudes and preferences, beliefs and predictions, opinions, behavior and experiences
– both in past and present time Cohen, Manion Morrison, 2011.
The researcher distributed a questionnaire to collect the data from respondents. The questionnaire sheet is provided in appendix B. As Wilson and
McLean 1994 say that “the questionnaire is a widely used and useful instrument
for collecting survey information, providing structured, often numerical data, ……” Cohen, Manion, Morrison, 2000, p.377. The researcher formulated
questions that could obtain students‟ thoughts, feelings, attitudes, beliefs, values,
responses, personality, and behavioral intentions Johnson Christensen, 2011. According to Johnson and Christensen 2011, there are two types of
questionnaires, namely open-ended questionnaire and close-ended questionnaire. An open-ended question enables participants to respond in any way that
they please. Open-ended questions are typically analyzed qualitatively. In PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
33 contrast, a closed-ended question requires participants to choose from a
limited number of responses that are predetermined by the researcher p. 169.
Since the researcher analyzed the students‟ responses to the implementation of
impromptu speech practice, the researcher conducts an open-ended questionnaire to get detail data from the respondents.
