CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS, IMPLICATIONS, AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter contains three sections. They are the conclusions of the study, implications for a teaching learning activity, and suggestions for future
researchers. In the conclusions of the study the writer concludes the findings of Kimberly Chang’s intrapersonal conflicts revealed in Jean kwok’s Girl in
Translation and the findings of how Kimberly Chang solves her intrapersonal
conflict. The second part is the implication for the teaching learning activity so that this study can be implemented in teaching learning activity. In the last
chapter, the writer presents suggestions for future researchers who might use this study as the reference to study intrapersonal conflict and conflict resolution.
A. Conclusions
The writer presents the conclusions of two main points from the analysis in chapter four. The first conclusion is Kimberly’s intrapersonal conflicts and the
second is the ways used by Kimberly to solve her conflict.
1. Kimberly Chang’s Intrapersonal Conflicts
Kimberly was born in Hongkong and spent her childhood there. However, after her father’s death, she and her mother move to America. Kimberly faces
many problems in her new place. Those problems cause intrapersonal conflicts for her. there are nine intrapersonal conflicts analyzed in the chapter four. The first
intrapersonal conflict is avoidance-avoidance. It occurs when a person has to face
the situation that requires himher to make the decision between two unpleasant things. Kimberly has to choose whether she tells the truth that she gets 0 grade to
her mother or she lies to her. The second intrapersonal conflict of Kimberly is the first kind of double
approach-avoidance. First double approach-avoidance has two outputs. Both of them have either ba
d or good features. This conflict happens when Kimberly’s neighbor tells her and her mother that the goverment will break down all the
buildings on their block and across the street. Kimberly is confused whether she
stays in the old apartment or she moves to the new one.
The third intrapersonal conflict is avoidance-avoidance. She has to choose two unpleasant things. The first is she chooses to accept Luke’s challenge but she
may be killed by him. The second choice is she tells someone else and the bad possibility is that her mother and her bestfriend will know all about her lies.
The fourth intrapersonal conflict is the first type of double-avoidance. She has to two choices. Each of them has either bad or good thing. The first choice is
she continues her study in the private school and she can improve her English skill. She also can have the opportunity to get a better future. However, if she
chooses the private school, she has to pay a lot of money. The second choice is she chooses to study in the public school. She does not need to pay a lot of money
but she may not be able to improve her English skill and she may not have the opportunity to get a better future.
Kimberly’s fifth intrapersonal conflict is avoidance-avoidance. Kimberly faces two unplasant things. If she keeps wearing the handmade underwear, she
will suffer from her friends’ reaction. However, if she tells her mother perhaps her mother will not buy her new underwear.
Next intrapersonal conflict is approach-avoidance. She faces pleasant and unpleasant things. Her mother and Matt’s mother think that Kimberly and Matt
likes each other. That statement creates the intrapersonal conflict for Kimberly. She will be very happy if Matt also has the same feeling as her. However, if Matt
does not like her, it will hurt her very much. In the seventh intrapersonal conflict, Kimberly faces avoidance-avoidance
intrapersonal conflict. She feels exhausted because everyday she faces many problems. She wants to give up but it seems impossible because she has some
responsibility to fulfill. However, the choice to keep staying will make her stressful.
Kimberly’s eighth intrapersonal conflict is the first type of double approach-avoidance. The day before the oral examination, she has to help her
mother to finish the shipment until past two a.m. She can choose to give up and she can sleep well that night. However, that choice perhaps will make her fail on
the oral examination. The last intrapersonal conflict is the first type of double approach-
avoidance. Kimberly is pregnant after she and Matt have sexual intercourse. She is confused what she should do. The first choice is having the abortion. If she does
that she will not be ashamed and she will not have the responsibility as a mother. However, that choice is considered as a crime. The second choice is to keep her
baby. The consequence of the second choice is Kimberly will have the responsibilty of being a mother.
2. Conflict Resolutions
Even though Kimberly experiences conflicts, she tries to solve them. She solves her intrapersonal conflict with different ways. The writer has anaylzed how
Kimberly solves her intrapersonal conflict by referring to theories of conflict resolution from Isenhart and Spagle 2000 and Decenzo and Silhanek 2002.
Kimberly uses mediation to solve her first intrapersonal conflict. In mediation, people who experience conflict need a third person or a mediator. The
Mediator should not be biased but sheher has to help the subject of conflict to make the decision. Mediator also has to be a motivator. Kimberly tells the truth to
her mother. Fortunately, her mother can be a good mediator for Kimberly. She is not biased but she gives Kimberly motivation to keep doing good things so that
her teacher can give her a second chance. Kimberly solves her second intrapersonal conflict by using integrative
negotiation. It has two goals. The first goal is to make as great as possible the importance between two individuals. The Second is to keep the connection.
Kimberly chooses to stay in the old apartment. She thinks that stay in the old apartment until they can pay their debt is considered as making as great as
possible the importance between Kimberly and her mother and Aunt Paula. Staying in the old apartment can also mantain the connection
between Kimberly’s family and Aunt Paula family.
Kimberly solves her third intrapersonal conflict by using know who is involve
. It is suitable for those who want to face the conflict rather than to escape. Finally, Kimberly chooses to fight Luke. She h
as considered about Luke’s emotion and character, the impacts of Luke challenge toward herself, the reaction
of the people around her, and so forth. The fourth conflict resolution is know who is involved. She decides to
study at the private school. She consults her problem to Mrs. LaGuardia. Kimberly uses determine the conflict source and distributive negotiation as to
solve the fifth conflict. Kimberly knows that her her conflict is caused by different habits. In Hongkong, girls do not change their clothes together. Kimberly also
uses distributive negotiation. Kimberly also forces her mother to buy her new underwear so that her friends do not ridicule her anymore. The sixth conflict
resolution is know who is involved . After knowing about the “key players” she
decides to tell her feeling to Matt. Fortunately, Matt has the same feeling as her. Kimberly uses determine the conflict source and know who is involved as
the conflict resolution for her seventh intrapersonal conflict. Conflict can be caused by various things. However, the common cause is communication
differences or personal differences. Kimberly faces both communication and personal differences. After she understands the causes of her conflict, she chooses
to stay and face her exhauting life cycle. Instead of running away, Kimberly comforts herself with car and motorcycle magazines.
The eight conflict resolution is know who is involved. This conflict resolution used by the individual who wants to face the conflict rather than to
