Gambar di atas menggambarkan kondisi ospf bekerja dimana dibuat router tambahan yang ditempatkan di semua gedung UPN Jatim, hal ini bertujuan untuk membuat beckup dari router yang sudah ada sehingga memiliki jalur baru yang nantinya digunakan untuk memilih jalur alternative seandainya jalur utama yang dilaluinya terputus, selai itu hal ini bertujuan untuk mendukung proses kerja dari protokol OSPF Open Shortest Path First itu sendiri. Untuk menentukan lintasan terpendek diperlukan sebuah nilai cost yang diasumsikan seperti gambar di atas, dalam penentuan jalur terpendek OSPF menggunakan algoritma dijkstra yang akan di uji coba pada bab selanjutnya.
