Verifying the dimensional sources in situational interest will enable teachers to identify, manipulate, and control motivation Hidi, 2001 to enhance learning in
education.
b. Individual Interest
Individual interest is a relatively enduring predisposition to experience enjoyment in working with particular subject matter. An individual interest may
or may not provide a student with the support to put forth effort when faced with a difficult task, presumably because the identification of individual interest in terms
of enjoyment provides no information about the depth of a students knowledge about the topic Dewey in the State of university, 2009. In research, individual
interest is considered to be an individuals predisposition characterized by high attention given to certain events and objects. Individual interest is activity-specific
and associated with value and previous knowledge Wade, 2001. Dewey in the State of university 2009 adds that individual interest is a
relatively enduring predisposition to re-engage particular classes of subject matter over time. A student with a well-developed individual interest for a subject has
more stored knowledge and stored value for that subject than he or she has for other subjects. With more stored knowledge and stored value for a given subject
matter, the student is positioned to begin asking curiosity questions that drive knowledge acquisition, consolidation, and elaboration, and that leads the student
to persist in the face of frustration or difficulty. Hidi 1990 states that personal, individual interest takes a longer time to
develop and affects a persons knowledge and values over time. Personal interest

is believed to fuel ones pursuit of knowledge toward the development of expertise. Ainley et al 2002 states that in physical education, individual interest
is associated with students personal preferences of certain physical activities over others. For example, some students prefer basketball to track and field, others
prefer tumbling to baseball. When the lesson content matches a students individual interest, the student is likely to display high motivation to engage in it.
