B. Research Design

In this study, data was collected from students through their reading comprehension after giving a treatment. The method used in this study was quantitative method with quasi experimental design. The experiment was treated to two groups, one group was taught by using DRTA method treatment class and another group as control class taught without DRTA method conventional. Experimental design used in this study aimed to investigate the effect of teaching method and reading interest on students‟ reading comprehension. The design used was treatment by level 2 x 2, it consisted of two independent variables and one dependent variable. The first independent variable was teaching method and the second variable was reading interest, while dependent variable was students‟ reading comprehension. The experimental group was student at class VIII A of Mts S Jamiyyah Islamiyyah which consisted of 40 students who were given DRTA method. The control group was students at class VIII C of Mts S Jamiyyah Islamiyyah which consisted of 40 students who were given conventional teaching method. The two classes received the material on reading comprehension, narrative text, with the same time allocation. The material provided in accordance with that specified in the curriculum. The data in this study were obtained by giving questionnaire on student‟s reading interest before the class began and by giving the final test in each of students either in experimental group or in control group. 39 Frequency of meetings in this study was six times meeting three weeks. Five meetings were to give the subject matter related to narrative text and once to give the final test. Each meeting was conducted twice a week for 80 minutes, 40 minutes per meeting. Both classes received the same lesson that wa s “narrative text” with the same allocation of time.

C. The Population and Sample 1.

Target Population Target population in this study was all students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Jam‟iyyah Islamiyyah Pondok Aren Tangerang Selatan which had common defining characteristic could be identified. It consisted of 13 parallel classes in which each class consisted of 40 students.

2. Scope Population

Because of time limitation, the scope population was grade 8 students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Jam‟iyyah Islamiyyah Pondok Aren Tangerang Selatan in academic year 20142015 which consisted of 4 classes and each class consisted of 40 students.

3. Sample

The sample of this study was determined by cluster random sampling technique with equal characteristics and probability. Creswell 2012 stated that in this random sampling technique, research subject in the population are mixed so that all subject are considered equal and every member of selected groups have similar characteristics and probability. Thus, the sample of this study was two classes of eight grade students class 8 of MTs Jamiyyah Islamiyyah. One class as experimental class comprised of 40 students, and the other class as controlled class comprised of 40 students as well.

D. The Technique of Collecting Data

Experimental design used in this study was Treatment by Level 2x2. There were one dependent variable and two independent variables in this study. The dependent variable is reading comprehension and independent variables are teaching method and reading interest. The technique of collecting data was used test and non test technique. Test was used to obtain result of students‟ reading comprehension, while non test in this case questionnaire wa s used to gain information of students‟ reading interest. 40

E. Research Instrument

Information needed in this study involved data of reading interest and reading comprehension. Reading interest data were obtained through questionnaire while reading comprehension instrument were obtained through test. The questionnaires on students‟ reading interest were developed on a five point Likert. The five responses used in the Likert scale include: Strongly Agree SA, Agree A, Undecided U Disagree D Strongly Disagree SD. In addition, for reading comprehension instrument test used to gain information related to reading comprehension in multiple choice questions. The number of item is 30 numbers in multiple choice in order to be easier in administering and investigating students‟ reading comprehension score. 1 Instrument for Reading Interest

a. Conceptual Definition

The student‟s reading interest was desire of arising out from within oneself and supported by environment to read and love accompanied to get knowledge what they read and motivation from within someone‟s tendency towards reading. Attention and looking perfectly and accurately toward reading. The i ndicators of student‟s reading interest of Mts S Jamiyyah Islamiyyah class VIII were as follows: 1 the obedience of reading, 2 the strong motivation, 3 the students desire to ask question, 4 feeling pleasure to do the changing process, 5 the participation and activities in learning.

b. Operational Definition

The reading interest of the work was the respondent score which obtained based on the instrument concerning attention of the students in reading especially reading text accompanied with existence of follow up from reading instrument that measured every indicator: 1 the obedience of learning, 2 the strong motivation, 3 the students desire to ask question, 4 feeling pleasure to do the changing process, 5 the participation and activities in learning. The questionnaires on students‟ reading interest were developed on a five point Likert. The five responses used in the Likert scale include: Strongly Agree SA, Agree A, Undecided U Disagree D Strongly Disagree SD.
