The meaning of Colours for Hindu Balinese
There are three basic colors in Balinese Hindu. They are red, white and black. Red is the color of Brahma God, the god of creator in Hinduism. It is the symbol of

braveness. In making offerings, the Balinese use red flowers, cakes, flags, etc. The red color, traditionally is obtained from the colour of palm sugar, flowers and certain
trees. White is the colour of Iswara God. White is the symbol of purity, holiness and honesty. Black is the colour of Wisnu God. Black is the symbol darkness.
Another colour that is used in traditional Balinese is the chessboard black and white pattern which is called „poleng‟. „Poleng‟ pattern can be seen in big threes,
big rocks believed as being sacred by the Balinese as well as in statues or shrines. The balck and white chessboard pattern is an indication of the „Rwa Bhineda‟
concept, which is the Balinese believe of the mutual dualism. The word „Rwa‟ means „two‟ and „Bhineda‟ means „opposite‟. Thus, the Balinese view that the balance of the
two opposites that exist in the world such as day and night, high and low, big and small, light and dark will bring peacefulness to the world.
