Race R Degree of intimacy DI

Another example of degree of intimacy DI is provided below. One day, everyone is gathered for the Christening Party in Hawking family’s house. Jane places her new baby, Timothy, into Stephen’s lap. Then, she goes to the kitchen. Isobel Hawking follows Jane into the kitchen. Jane is shocked when her mother-in- law suddenly asking who exactly Timothy’s father. In the conversation, it is seen that Isobel Hawking uses first name FN in addressing Jane. Here, Isobel uses first name FN instead of other types because they have known each other. In conclusion, degree of intimacy DI can affect people in addressing someone else. The relationship between the speaker and the addressee can be seen through the use of certain type of address term which is employed by both of them. The use of first name may indicate the close relationship and intimacy between the speaker and the addressee. 4: 26 Isobel Hawking : We do have a right to know, Jane. Jane Wilde : Know what? Isobel Hawking : Whose child Timothy is? Stephen’s or Jonathan’s? Jane, turning, wheeling on Isobel, shocked. Jane Wilde : That’s what you think of me. CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS

After presenting the research findings and discussion in the previous chapter, the conclusion and suggestions are provided as follows.

A. Conclusion

The data of the research are classified based on the theory of address terms by Wardaugh and Chaika. There are two objectives of this research: 1 to identify the types of address terms uttered by the characters in The Theory of Everything movie, and 2 to analyze the social factors of address terms uttered by the characters in The Theory of Everything movie. With regard to the research findings and the discussion, this research reveals five types and seven social factors of address terms employed by the characters in the movie. In reference to the first objective of the research, there are five types of address terms found in the movie. They are first name FN, title with last name TLN, title only T, special name SN, and kinship term KT. Of the five types, first name FN ranks first. The massive use of first name by the characters of the movie is affected by the scenes and circumstances in the movie. The movie mostly takes place in a house. The use of first name to address people is one way to reach intimacy among the characters. First name not only appears when the setting of the conversation is in a house, but also appears when the conversation occurs in a college area. On the other hand, last name LN and pet name PN are not employed by the characters in the movie. Last name never appears in the movie since the settings of the movie mostly take place in a house and in a college area. Last name never appears in the movie although a college is a place where last name should exist due to the politeness and respect. Pet name also never appears in the movie. Pet name is usually appearing in the conversation in which the participants are family member or a couple. Even if there are several conversations taking place in a house, this type does not occur in the movie. Furthermore, in relation with the second objective of the research, there are five social factors of address terms found in the movie. They are particular occasion PO, social status SS, age A, family relationship FR, and degree of intimacy DI. The social factor of address terms which mostly influences the use of address terms by the characters is degree of intimacy DI. In this kind of setting, first name is usually used to address someone as it indicates equality and familiarity. This type of address terms is regarded as a sign of considerable intimacy. Degree of intimacy DI is dominantly performed by the characters since the settings of the conversations mostly take place in a house. In a house, the interactions between the members of the family are mostly depicted. There are also four social factors of address terms that do not appear in this movie. They are gender G, occupational hierarchy OH, transactional status TS, and race R. Gender and race are not found because the characters inevitably respect one another and override gender and race since the settings of the movie mostly happen in a house. Occupational hierarchy does not appear in the movie although the settings or the context of the conversations are in the college where people have an occupational hierarchy to be upheld. The characters use title only or title with last name only to show respect and politeness as their nature as students to their lecturers or as the younger to the elder. Like occupational hierarchy, there is not any transactional status found in the movie. Transactional status can be seen in doctor-patient and priest-penitent relationship. The conversations mostly take place in a house and in a college where no one achieves a certain specialization in the work field.

B. Suggestions

In reference to the above findings, some suggestions are conferred for following to the parties: 1. To Students of English Education Department English students who major on linguistics may apply sociolinguistic approach, especially related to address term by analyzing it in different movies with different social settings. They can use this research as a reference to conduct a further study involving the phenomena of address terms in a movie. 2. To English Lecturers A movie which is the representation of human’s real life can be a good and interesting medium for learning address terms. Moreover, using a movie as the medium of learning address terms makes the learning activity more enjoyable because the students can enjoy the story and study the address terms performed by the characters in the movie at the same time. 3. To Other Researchers This research only focuses on the types and social factors of address terms. Some other problems such as functions and purposes of address terms have not been revealed. Therefore, other researchers may conduct research on observing address term from different perspectives.
