Rapists Men in Firdaus’ Eyes

police station if she refuses to go with him. She has no choice; finally, she goes with him and has sex pp. 66-67.

4.2.2.4 Liars

Firdaus sees men as liars. They do promise, but after that they break it. Bayoumi breaks his promise to give Firdaus a job. He makes her stay in his house while waiting for a job. In fact, he does even rape her p. 52. Another one is a police officer. He asks her to go with him. He promises to give her money. In fact, he does not give her the money as his promise pp. 66-67. Fawzy is also a liar that Firdaus meets in Sharifa‟s apartment. He says that he wants to protect her from Sharifa‟s abuse. He wants to marry her. In fact, he does even have sex with Sharifa p. 62-64. Ibrahim is the person who makes Firdaus come back to her previous job as a prostitute. Formerly, she decides to live normally as other women. She does not want to be a prostitute anymore. She works in an office. She meets Ibrahim as a colleague. She has impressed him for her critical thinking about justice for the workers. She loves him and they make love. Unfortunately, one of her friends tells her that Ibrahim is engaged with the chairperson‟s daughter p. 90. He is a liar because he seems pretending to love her and wants to protect her. Justice and the abolition are only a mask to get the money and position in that company. Finally, he gets the chairperson‟s daughter. She says that this experience is the hardest, saddest, and the most painful she has in her life. “I had never experienced suffering such as this, never felt deeper pain” p. 93. The conclusion of all is that every experience that Firdaus has with men, brings negative effects to her life. Those experiences change her perception about men. Formerly she thinks that she can do nothing to rebel against men‟s authority, but later she realizes that actually men and women have the same right. It is affected by the historical background of Egypt in which men‟s position was higher than women‟s position in the society. However, Firdaus‟ character changes from a gentle woman into a tough woman. Learning from her experiences, she knows that being a prostitute is better than being a wife. A wife does not have any choice to do many activities because she has to ask her husband‟s permission. On the contrary, a prostitute decides her own choice. She can do many things that she wants to do without asking for someone‟s permission. Becoming a prostitute is one of the proofs that Firdaus‟ way of thinking changes because of her perception of men. By being a prostitute, she can make men feel disappointed, sad, and rejected. Additionally, she breaks the rule which men dominate many things by killing a pimp.

CHAPTER 5 CONCLUSIONS, IMPLICATIONS, AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter consists of three parts. The first part concerns the conclusions of the analysis of the problem formulation. The second part concerns the implications in an education field. The third part concerns suggestions for the future researchers in teaching the English language using literary works.

5.1 Conclusions

Based on the analysis, Firdaus is described as an independent woman. Although men dominate many aspects in the country, she can live without a man. Even, she does not marry. She earns her money from her job as a prostitute. She is also optimistic. She does not see life based on the failure and bad luck that she faces. She expects to have a better life than other women. Being treated badly by men makes her hate them very much. Since Firdaus is afraid of them, she cannot do anything when men treated her badly. This hatred makes her revengeful. She is also a smart girl. She gets good marks at her school. She loves reading many books. She is quite diligent. That is why she graduates from her school with the best mark. The experiences that Firdaus has with men change her perception about men. She thinks that she can do nothing to rebel against men’s authority. Raping, abusing and oppressing are usual things which are done by them. She cannot break the rule because she is a common woman from the lower class. Therefore, 65
