4.2.1.6 Fawzy
Fawzy is also a betrayal lover that Firdaus meets. After leaving Bayoumi‟s house, she meets Sharifa Salah el Dine. She is a high-class prostitute. She is the
person who teaches Firdaus how to value herself, how to be a tough woman, and how to be a high-class prostitute. She takes her in her apartment and invites her
live in there. She makes her over so she looks like a high-class woman. However, she does not give it to her freely. In fact, she has to pay but Firdaus does not
realize it. Every day and even every hour, men come in and out from Firdaus‟ bedroom. When their sexual desire is already fulfilled, they have to pay for it to
Sharifa as Fawzy tells it to Firdaus p. 62. Men who come in and have sex with her always ask the same question,
whether she experiences pleasure or not, and her answers always the same, „yes‟. A man comes in her bedroom and they do have sex. His name is Fawzy. This time
he asks a different question from other men have. He asks whether she feels any pain or not. She is surprised because the men who come always ask whether she
feels pleasure or not. He wants to marry her. He tells her that Sharifa takes the benefit from her body. Since he wants to marry her, he asks for permission. He
goes to Sharifa‟s room and tells her that he wants to marry Firdaus. Sharifa refuses it. She does not permit him to marry Firdaus because Firdaus is her source
of income money p. 63. The good thing is that Fawzy tells Sharifa that he will marry Firdaus. „I shall marry her, Sharifa‟ p. 63.
Firdaus is waiting for Fawzy in her bedroom. She can hear what they are talking about, but she cannot hear Sharifa‟s voice then. She hears their humming
sound. Sometimes they are clear, but sometimes they are not. After a while, she hears Sharifa is protesting to him. It follows with the sound of the bed creak p.
64. Since the sound is very noisy, she goes to Sharifa‟s room and sees what happen there. She finds Fawzy is lying naked with Sharifa at his side. Without
saying anything, she goes back to her room, puts on the dress and gets her little bag, and then goes away from Sharifa‟s apartment.
I walked on the tip of my toes to Sharifa‟s room, and found her lying naked with Fawzy at her side. I tiptoed back to my room, put on the first
dress I could lay my hands on, took my little bag, and hurried down the flights of stairs into the street p. 65.
Those experiences belong to one of Firdaus‟ bad experiences because Fawzy, a man who says that he will marry her, is lying naked with a woman at his side. A
hope to be loved and protected disappears. However, it shows how easy a man makes use of women. As Fawzy is a rich person and lives in a high level in the
society, it makes him easy to do anything that he wants. Unfortunately, he is a liar because he treats her well in the first time, but later he makes love with another
girl.
4.2.1.7 A Policeman
Escaping from Sharifa‟s apartment, Firdaus meets a police officer. He approaches her in a dark night. His purpose is to have sex with her as what the
same other men do. She tries to refuse him, but he holds on to her arm. She shows him her secondary certificate, but he does not consider on it. He does even threat
her to take her in the police station because she is a prostitute. He says that it is his duty to arrest a prostitute. However, if she goes with him to his house, he will not
take her in the police station. He said, „I‟ll pay you. Don‟t think I want to have you for nothing.
… „Don‟t play games with me, and don‟t try to haggle with me either, or I‟ll
take you off to the police station‟. …
„You‟re a prostitute, and it‟s my duty to arrest you, and others of your kind‟ pp. 66-67.
She does not have a power to refuse. After that, they go from the place they are standing. It adds her revenge to men. They are selfish. They only think about
themselves, about how to fulfill their sexual desire and get a lot of money. Firdaus meets the kind man whose purpose is to have sex with her.
Unfortunately, this man is a police officer whose job is to protect and save people. Moreover, he makes use of his job as a police officer to abuse her. He does even
threat her. After he gets what he wants that is to have a sex with her, he chases her away from his house. Therefore, it strengthens her perception of men that all of
them are the same. The government, father, uncle, and even a police officer cannot treat women politely. They do abuses and make use of their authority to
control many things including women.
4.2.1.8 Marzouk
Marzouk is a pimp. Since the beginning of his coming, he is shown as a bad man. He forces Firdaus to accept him as her pimp. She also has to pay. He
comes twice to Firdaus to ask for her money. He says that a prostitute needs protection from police officers. After that, she gives him money and then he goes
