Liars Men in Firdaus’ Eyes

she keeps silent when some men rape her and even hit her hardly without any reason. Men who come in Firdaus’ life are the same. What they do to Firdaus is just to make use of her body. They make use of their status and job to have sex with her. Since men have a higher status than women, they seem able to abuse her without worrying about the law. Moreover, if a man has a job, such as a police officer. In fact, they do abuse her. That is why she perceives that men are abusers, rapists, oppressors, and liars. She also perceives that men control many things. They have their full right. On the contrary, women do not have any right. A woman cannot do something without a husband’s permission. However, Firdaus thinks that men and women should have the same right. Men should not treat women as they like. Women should have the same right to men in deciding things, such as working outside the house and studying at school. The conclusion of this study is that society brings an important effect to Firdaus’ character. Seeing the fact that men treat women badly makes her perceive that women should not treated like that. Since her childhood, Firdaus sees her father treat her mother badly many times. First, she thinks that it is fine for a husband to do that because he is the head of a household. However, when it happens repeatedly, she changes her idea about it. It creates her bad perception about men for the first time. This kind of bad perception continues until she is adult. She is treated badly because she is a woman from the lower class. Those experiences make her perceive that most men are abusers, rapists, oppressors, and liars. She does not want to be controlled by men. She does not want to live under men’s domination anymore. Not getting married is one of the proofs that she refuses men’s domination for her life. Therefore, she struggles to get a freedom for her own life, which is as a prostitute.

5.2 Implications

This study talks much about male domination. Men are considered having more rights than women. A woman cannot do anything without a man’s permission. However, the story happened many years ago, but now it is different. In some countries, men and women have the same right. However, there are some portions in which men have to do more than women, but basically they have the same opportunities in many things. A woman can be a teacher, a police, and even a president. One of the examples is Megawati Soekarno Putri who became the first woman president of Indonesia some years ago. It proves there is no more limitation between them. Indonesia gives the same opportunity to the citizens. The citizens may choose their religion, choose the president, share the opinion in public, and many more. Undang-undang Dasar 1945, section 311 states that “Setiap warga Negara berhak mendapat pendidikan”. This statement clearly states that everybody has the same chance in order to get education. They are able to study at school without being differenciated based on their status. A teacher should be fair in herhis class. A teacher should not differentiate the students based on the gender. Boys and girls are able to get the same knowledge and opportunity at school. In a class, a teacher has to give the same opportunity to the students when learning process is going on. If there is a girl student, who does not know something, a teacher has to give more explanation to her. A teacher has to treat the students fairly, concerning a teacher’s job that is to make the students ready to work or continue their study. In some schools, every student may join in some school activities, such as scout, volleyball, football, badminton, basketball, dance, etc. Those activities do not see the status between boy students and girl students. If there is a girl who wants to join in basketball, that is fine. On the contrary, if there is a boy who wants to join in dancing activities, it is alright. The conclusion is that nowadays there are no differences between men and women. They have the same right in many things. A woman may do a man’s job. On the other hand, a man may do a woman’s job. Since they have the same status, they are able to live without social imbalance.
