Noun Blends Word Categories of Source Words in English Blends

As presented in following Table 4.6, adjective blends consist of four subclasses. The first subclass consists of adjective blends which are composed of two adjectives A + A. The examples are bleen blue x green, formasual formal x casual, slungry sleepy x hungry, fugly fat x ugly, bewrecked bereft x wrecked, and cooltastic cool x fantastic. The second subclass is the combination of an adjective and a noun A + N. Many blends such as freemium free x premium, fandumb fanatic x dumb, provacawhoritive provocative x whore, stupig stupid x pig, fabulosexual fabulous x homosexual, and adorabubble adorable x bubble belong to this class. The third subclass includes blends which are formed of a noun and an adjective N + A. The instances are manbiguous man x ambiguous, pizzalicious pizza x delicious, bicurious bisexual x curious, beerlicious beer x delicious, gaytarded gay x retarded, petrochemical petroleum x chemical, and telegenic television x photogenic. The last subclass consists of blends which combine an adverb and an adjective Adv + A. The examples are finimany finitely x many, preet pretty x sweet, infimany infinitely x many, rugly really x ugly, plig plenty x big, and absoludicrous absolutely x ludicrous. 3. Verb Blends

The third position fit into verb blends. Verb blends can be formed from two verbs V + V, a noun with a verb N + V, and a verb with a noun V + N. As shown in Figure 4.8, the combination of two verbs is the most frequent. It includes 29 blends. Next, the combination of a noun and a verb follows with 13 blends. Meanwhile, there are only 3 blends which combine a verb and a noun. Figure 4.8 Word Category of Verb Blends As can be seen in Table 4.7, verb blends are only classified into three subclasses. The first subclass is the combination of a noun and a verb N + V. 4. Adverb Blends

The last position belongs to adverb blends. Adverb blends do not have a range of variations. The result shows that there is only one possibility of adverb blends in its formation, namely the combination of two adverbs Adv + Adv. As shown in Table 4.8, adverb blends are only feasible when they are formed of two adverbs. For example, the blend absotively is the combination of adverb absolutely and positively. The other examples are smore some x more, mayhaps maybe x perhaps, positutely positively x absolutely, mosdef most x definitely, bactually but x actually, and irregardless irrespective x regardless.
