4.1.2 Objective

The act of running can be performed for both competitive and non- competitive purpose. When one is running a marathon, surely it is performed for competition. However, when people are running towards the emergency exit because of fire in the building, it is not performed for competition. The act of racing is mostly used for the purpose of competition, e.g. the racing of running, hurdling, fast- walking, or even cars racing. When a horse is galloping, it is possible that he is in a particular competition or is running amok because something has threatened him. But when one is galloping, it is because a reaction of unintended action. For example when there is a knock on the door, one will gallop extemporaneously in order to open the door. Sprinting can be performed for both competitive and non-competitive purpose. When one is in a race of sprinting, it is performed for competition. But if one is having a practice on sprinting for championship, it is not performed for competition. Running can be performed with or without intention. When one is running because of being afraid, the running is done spontaneously and without any intention. It also happens when one is running out of the building because there is a bomb issue inside that building. However, when one is running to catch the bus, the activity is done for clear purpose. The same case when one is running for a certain competition, the agent has certain purpose, i.e. to be a winner. When one is racing, it has precise target that is to win the race itself. For example in hurdling race, one will compete each other to run as fast as possible to reach the finish line. When one is galloping because of something frightening, it is a spontaneous action and is without any 56 intention. But when a horse is galloping in a horse-race, it has a distinct purpose. When one is sprinting, he might do it for self-practice or he is in a sprinting competition. Thus, it has clear purpose.
