1.2 Problem of the Study

Inthisnovel, there areseveralquestionsthat needed to analyze, that are : 1. What unit shifts are used in Larry Levin ‘Oogy, The Dog Only a Family Could Love’ and Maria Elvire ‘Oogy, Anjing Buruk Rupa yang Setia Menemani Perjalanan Suka dan Duka Sebuah Keluarga’? 2. Which is the most dominant unit shift occurred in Larry Levin ‘Oogy, The Dog Only a Family Could Love’ and Maria Elvire ‘Oogy, Anjing Buruk Rupa yang Setia Menemani Perjalanan Suka dan Duka Sebuah Keluarga’? 1.3 Objective of the Study Based on the problems above, the purposes to analyze this novel are: 1. To find out the unit shifts used in Larry Levin ‘Oogy, The Dog Only a Family Could Love’ and Maria Elvire ‘Oogy, Anjing Buruk Rupa yang Setia Menemani Perjalanan Suka dan Duka Sebuah Keluarga’. 2. 1.4 Scope of the Study

Based onthe background above, the scope of this study focuseson finding the unitshiftinthe Larry Levin “Oogy, The Dog Only a Family Could Love’ and Maria Elvire ‘Oogy, Anjing Buruk Rupa yang Setia Menemani Perjalanan Suka dan Duka Sebuah Keluarga”. Unit shifts represent change from a linguistic unit, such as a phrase in SL to the linguistic units that different hierarchical positions in the SL, for example, clause. Linguistic units may be a sentence, clause, phrase or word. In order to avoid excessively large discussions, the writer only focus on analyzes unit shift from phrase to clause and clause to phrase.

1.5 Significance of the Study

Theoretically, the significance of this study is to give contribution to development of linguistic studies, especially for the translation study about unit shift found in translating English into Bahasa Indonesia. Practically, the result of this thesis can be used as a reference in process of translating and framework for translating English into Bahasa Indonesia or vise versa, especially in the case of unit shift.
