Mabel’s behavior which shows her confidence to persuade Jack to love her shows that she is aggressive. Her aggressiveness arises because she does not have a person who gives care and attention for her after the death of her parents and the marriage of her sister. Her brothers also do not care about her. Because of that, Mabel assumes that Jack Fergusson can be a person she can depend on because he has helped her when she tries to commit suicide. Mabel’s aggressiveness appears because the need of someone to rely on. Through the main characters from the three different short stories, we learn that the absence of love can affect someone’s psychological condition. There are many influences happened in human being after experiencing the absence of love in human life. The influences of the absence of love on each person are different, depending on the characterization that human have. 67

CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter consists of two parts. The first part is the conclusions or findings of the analysis. The second part is the suggestions which will present the suggestions for future researchers and suggestions for teaching English by using literary text.

A. Conclusions

After analyzing the main characters’ development from three short stories, the writer comes to the conclusions that answer the problem formulation. The writer concludes that the main characters have similar problem they face in life. They experience the absence of love in her life which influences their behavior. Based on the analysis, there are two points can be drawn. First is the description of characteristics of the main characters from the three short stories discussed. Olenka in The Darling is characterized as an interesting woman. She is an attractive person. Olenka is a person who easily falls in love with a man. She cares about her family, and also loves children. Olenka is a person who always needs others in her life. Emily in A Rose for Emily is described as a person who comes from rich family. She is honored by people in her town. Emily is an old woman who has a fat body. Emily is a person who loves her father very much. Emily is also stubborn and reclusive. She is a person who likes to hide her problem inside and does not want others know what she feels. Mabel in The Horse Dealer’s Daughter is described as a very nice and interesting girl. Mabel has good appearance. Mabel loves her parents very much. She is easy to make others fall in love with her. Mabel is also fragile because she is a person who always needs supports from others to motivate her life. The second concerns with the influence of the absence of love in the main characters’ behavior. Olenka in The Darling experiences the absence of love because the death of her father and her husband. After loss of people she loves, Olenka becomes an alienated person. She becomes a person who lives in sorrow. She rarely goes out and it makes Olenka difficult to make relationship with others, and she becomes unfriendly to everything that makes her become uncomfortable. Olenka becomes not care about herself. In thinking, Olenka becomes rigid. Emily in A Rose for Emily experiences the absence of love because of her fathers’ death. The death of her father makes her become an alienated person. Emily lives in sorrow. Her neighbor assumes that Emily suffers from fatigue. Emily has bad attitude towards her surrounding. Her unfriendliness makes Emily difficult to make a relationship with others. Emily also becomes a woman who does not care about herself after her father’s death. The death of her father makes Emily not confess to that reality. Emily tries to deny the reality of her father’s death because she wants to protect herself from an unpleasant reality. Losing her father also makes Emily become a possessive woman. Mabel in The Horse Dealer’s Daughter experiences the absence of love because she is left by her parents who have passed away and her sister who has married. The loneliness of Mabel also makes her alienate from her surrounding.
