the researcher related to the research, such as the method of data gathering in school, the number of participants, and other technical factors in this research. In
this reseach, the school asked the permission letter for conducting a research only from the university.
3. Planning the Research
The researcher determined the goals, listed the topics, stated the general purpose of each topic and stated the learning objectives.
4. Doing Learner’s Need Analysis
The researcher did the learner’s need analysis by distributing a questionnaire to the students as the participants. The students were 73 seventy
three science students in the eleventh grade of SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta in the academic year of 20112012 who were taken in all science classes. The
questionnaire was distributed to the students in order to gather the data about students’ needs related to reading materials and students’ difficulties in English
learning especially in reading.
5. Designing the Reading Materials
After analysing the students’ need through the questionnaire, the researcher started to design a set of English reading materials using contextual
teaching and learning approach for them. The researcher started by making an instructional syllabus. It contains some topics that have to be learnt in class,
especially in the eleventh grade of SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta. After having the syllabus, the researcher designed the reading materials by considering the
syllabus and the learners’ need analysis result.

6. Evaluating the Designed Materials
The designed materials should be evaluated by some experts before it is applied in school. In this research, the researcher asked the English teachers in
SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta and the researcher’s lecturers in the university to evaluate the designed materials. The researcher gathered the evaluation by
distributing a questionnaire to the teachers and the lecturers and conducting the interview with them.
7. Revising the Designed Materials
At last, the researcher revised the product based on the feedback, evaluation, comments, and suggestions given by the repondents. The researcher
revised the product in order to gain the final product.

CHAPTER IV RESEARCH RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
To answer the research questions, how English reading materials using Contextual Teaching and Learning CTL approach for the eleventh grade students of
SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta are designed and what the reading materials look like, the stages of presenting the design are elaborated in this chapter. There are five
stages: a research and information collecting, b planning, c developing preliminary form of product, d field testing result, and e main product revision.
A. The Process of Designing the Reading Materials
This part deals with the elaboration of the process of designing the reading materials. It includes the steps to design the English reading materials.
1. Research and Information Collecting
The researcher gathered the necessary information for developing the materials by interviewing English teachers of eleventh grade and distributing
questionnaire to the eleventh grade students of SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta. The acquired information consists of data concerning pre-assessment, learners’
characteristics and support services.
a. Pre-assessment
The pre-assessment data were acquired by interviewing two eleventh grade English teachers. The data include the English class, the students’ strengths and
