a. Stating Competency Standard, Basic Competences, and Topics
Every  school in  Indonesia has  been applied KTSP or  School-Based Curriculum which was instructed by the government. This curriculum had some goals
and purposes. The goals and general purposes of the designed material were adopted from the school curriculum, and are presented in Table 4.1.

Table 4.2 shows the goals and general purposes which should be achieved by the  students.  The  goals which  were  listed in  the  table were  the  goals  for  English
reading competences for  the  first  and  second  semesters of  eleventh  grade  students. Therefore, the  materials were designed  in  order  to  help  the  students  achieved  the
learning goals.

From  the  goals  and  general  purposes,  there  were  some  topics  that  should  be learned by the eleventh grade students in a year. For the reading competences, there
were  5  types  of  texts  and  several  functional  texts.  The topics  are  provided  in Table 4.2.
