The English learners should be careful in using code-switching in InfoKomputer magazine to help them in learning English. They should recheck whether the code-switching words are correct or incorrect. Thus, they can attain their language learning successfully. 52

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter presents the conclusions of this research and suggestions. The conclusions are the answers to three research questions. The suggestions are presented to the future researchers.

A. Conclusions

The conclusions were the answer to the research questions which were presented in Chapter One. Those were 1 What code-switching cases are found in InfoKomputer magazine? 2 What are the theoretical reasons for code-switching in InfoKomputer magazine?

1. Code-switching Cases

Code-switching cases found in InfoKomputer magazine were categorized according to their types. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that in two editions of InfoKomputer several code-switching types occurred. Based on Hoffman’s theory 1991 of types of code-switching, there were five types of code-switching which were used in this research. In this research, the researcher only found code-switching cases in four types. They were intra-word code- switching, intra-sentential code-switching, inter-sentential code-switching, and involving a word within a sentence code-switching. In intra-word code-switching, the researcher found that there were two subtypes of intra-word code-switching. The first, the code-switching occurred 53 only in single word. The second, the code-switching occurred in a word. However, in order to make the terms meaningful, the code-switching consisted of two or more words. Intra-word code-switching combined the English words with Indonesian prefixes and suffixes. In intra-sentential code-switching, the code- switching occurred within a sentence and consisted of two or more words. The researcher found that intra-sentential code-switching cases were in the form of noun phrase and clause. In inter-sentential code-switching, the code-switching occurred between the sentences. The researcher found that code-switching cases were in the form of single word, phrase and sentence. In involving a word within a sentence code-switching, the code-switching occurred inside the sentences and was in the form of single word. The researcher found that the cases were in the form of noun, adjective, verb and adverb.

1. Theoretical Reasons for Code-switching

There were five reasons which were presented in this research. They were proposed by Crystal 1987, Wardhaugh 1992 and Hoffman 1991. Based on the findings, the researcher found three theoretical reasons why the writers of the articles switched the code from Indonesian language into English. The first reason was talking about particular topic. The discussion related to the topic might influence the choice of code which was used. The researcher found that the writers of the articles decided to use English word rather than Indonesian words while discussed about particular topic. There were two levels of words which were used related to the topic under discussion. The first was the words which could not be translated into Indonesian language or had the
