c. Selecting Teaching Learning Activities and Materials
The activities in this design were aimed at helping students to achieve the goal. The materials used in this design were some taken from the internet but with
some considerations taken into account in constructing the materials. The materials used in this study were adapted to make them suitable with students’
proficiency level and suitable for Hotel Accommodation Department students’ needs.
The task-based materials were applied in this study. The task-based materials refer to a variety of games, role plays, simulations, and task-based
communication activities that are prepared in order to support Communicative Language Teaching classes. The major activities could be found in the designed
materials were role plays, group discussion, and simulation. There are seven units in the design. The topics were decided based on the
English syllabus used by SMK N I Kalasan. The writer divided the subject
contents into two parts in each section. They are Let’s Start and Let’s Practice.
They are elaborated as follows:
1. Let’s Start
This section is usually conducted as lead-in to the main activity. There are some activities involved in this section.
• Warming Up This section serves as the starting point that explores student’s background
knowledge and then relates it to the topic of the lesson. In this activity the teacher

gives some question or a short story based on the topic of the lesson. It can be individual work or group work activity.
• Vocabulary Building This activity facilitates students to be familiar with the new vocabularies.
In this section the students are asked to match the picture with the words given. It can be individual work or group work activity. They are only used in certain units.
• Listening This section is aimed to help the students to become familiar with the
conversation related to daily activities as hotel personnel. The activities are listen and complete or listen and choose.
2. Let’s Practice
This section provides the students with grammar review and some English simple expression. At the end student will be given the exercise for the topic that
has been learned to make the learners familiar with the expressions. The exercises can be written or spoken. This activity facilitates students to comprehend a written
text and also gain oral skill. Some of them are used in all lessons but others are only used in certain units.
• Reading comprehension It provides the activity to develop students’ understanding on the reading
text given. Students must answer the questions provided in this section. Some exercises in this section require the student to retell what they have read or make a

list. This exercise can be individual or in group work. Reading comprehension can be found in each unit.
• Speaking This activity provides opportunity for the students to develop their
speaking skills through some activities. There are role play, group discussion, interview, game, and presentation. Some activities can be in group work or
individual. The speaking activity can be found in each unit. • Writing
This section provides activity to develop students’ skill in developing their English grammar. There are also some grammar exercises and also production of
a short paragraph. It can only be found in certain units.
