2. Planning

This second step of Educational Research and Development RD discussed three steps. They are formulating goals, topics, and general purposes, formulating learning objectives, and selecting teaching learning activities and materials. Those three steps will be explained as following.

a. Formulating Goals, Topics, and General Purposes

In this study, the writer adapted School Based Curriculum usually known as 2006 Curriculum or Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan KTSP. The goals in this study were considered as Competency Standards modified by the writer from 2006 Curriculum. Having determined the goals, the writer specified the General Purposes that were stated as Basic Competences. The Goals and General Purposes of the designed materials based on principles of Communicative Language Teaching for the eleventh grade students of SMK N I Kalasan are presented in Table 4.2. Students are able to understand simple daily conversation either in professional context or personal one with non native speaker. Students are able to take simple messages either in direct or indirect interactions. Students are able to tell someone’s experience in details. Students are able to tell the working plans in the future. Students are able to tell various expressions of willingness. Students are able to understand simple instructions. Students are able to make short messages, clues, and lists using acceptable diction, spelling and grammar. After formulating the goals, the writer listed topics that were used in the designed materials based on the exploration of basic competence and results of needs survey. The topics are presented in Table 4.3. The writer also specified the Basic Competencies in each topic that are presented in Appendix F. Table 4.3. b. Formulating the Learning Objectives

After stating the basic competences, the writer formulated learning objectives of each topic. In this study, the specific learning objectives were stated as indicators. In each topic, they consist of indicators. Hopefully the indicators can be achieved after each topic is conducted. However, the formulation of indicators in each topic is presented in Table 4.4.
