out that teaching English to the fourth grade students was not difficult. There were many students who got good scores for their exam. They were also active to
participate during teaching-learning process in the class. According to the teacher, learning English vocabulary was so important
because vocabulary became a basic skill to learn other English skills such as speaking and reading. In the class, the teacher taught vocabulary more than the
other English skills. To help the students learn English vocabulary in the class, the teacher applied the materials provided in the textbooks. The teacher also
employed some pictorial media and created an interesting situation to support the students in learning. For drilling, the teacher gave some exercises from books and
speaking and reading practice. From the interview, the writer found out that the fourth grade needed a
kind of various teaching-learning activities to learn English vocabulary rather than from the textbooks. To facilitate it, the writer designed a variety of teaching-
learning materials and activities for the fourth grade which offered some kind of attractive teaching-learning activities to learn foreign language. The designed
materials would help both of the teacher and the students of fourth grade. For the teacher, the materials could be used as learning and teaching resource.
Meanwhile, for the students, the materials could help them to learn and improve the English vocabulary skill through various activities.
c. Students’ need based on the questionnaires for the students
In order to obtain a clear description of students’ need, the writer distributed questionnaires to the fourth grade students of SD Negeri II Sumberejo.

The questionnaires were distributed on September 2
nd
, 2010. Since there was only one class for each grade in SD Negeri II Sumberejo so the questionnaires were
distributed to one class of the fourth grade. The fourth grade itself consisted of 23 students. Unfortunately, there were 4 students who were absent when the
questionnaires were distributed. Therefore, from 23 students of the fourth grade, there were just 19 students who participated in accomplishing the questionnaires.
In short, the participant consisted of 11 girls and 8 boys. From the result of the questionnaires on need analysis, all students or
nineteen students 100 pointed out that they were interested in learning English. Furthermore, for the frequency of difficulties the students found in
learning English, there were eighteen students 94.74 who stated that they “sometime” found problem when learning English. Moreover, one student
5.26 stated that he “often” found problem in learning English. Furthermore, eighteen students 94.74 answered that they were active participating in
learning English in the class. One student 5.26 considered that he “sometime” active participating in learning English in the classroom. From the analysis, the
writer could state that all students of the fourth grade were considered to have high motivation and enthusiasm in learning English, although, they still found
difficulties in learning English. The data showed that nineteen students 100 liked a serious learning
situation. Meanwhile, six students also 31.58 stated that they liked a fun learning condition. There were also six students 31.58 who pointed out that
they liked an enjoyable learning situation. For the favourite learning activities,

fifteen students 78.95 stated that they liked listening to the teacher explanation. There were also fourteen students 73.68 who answered that they
liked making artworks such as pictures, wall ornament, and poster as well as doing exercises. There were also thirteen students 68.42 who stated that they
liked singing activity. Meanwhile, seven students 36.84 chose discussion with friends as their favourite activity. From the analysis, the writer concluded that the
students of fourth grade liked friendly situation with various activities which made them feel confident and comfortable in learning English in the classroom.
Further, based on the distributed questionnaires, the writer decided to list the top 8 topics from 16 options. These topics were chosen by the students of
fourth grade as their favourite topics to learn. The eight topics are presented in Table 4.1 below.

Furthermore, based on the result of the questionnaire above, the writer decided to present the English materials with various activities which could

facilitate students’ learning style in each topic. The learning activities were designed to stimulate students’ motivation to learn with ease, to help them
exploring and experiencing themselves in learning English. Hence, the learning materials could help the students to learn English comfortably and develop their
English, especially vocabulary.
