The use of subtitles ‘Let’s Do It’ and ‘Let’s Work It Out’ in the Final Product Revision

5 The lay outs on the designed materials were well-presented. 6 The materials were contextual because they were related to everyday things and events. 7 The materials were appropriate with syllabus and curriculum of English today. Besides, there are some points of comments and opinions which were considered as criticism. For that criticism, the participants gave some suggestions for the writer to make some revisions and improvements to develop the designed materials. To make it clear, the comments and opinions and the suggestions are summarized in the Table 4.6. Table 4.6. The Summary of Comments and Opinions and Suggestions of the Designed Materials No. Comments opinions Suggestions 1. Some instructions were less appropriate for the activities or tasks such as the use of word ‘practice’ instead of ‘read’ for reading activities. It would be better if the writer considered the word choice for the instructions and subtitles so that it would be more appropriate with the kind of the learning activities. 2. The use of words ‘activity’ in Let’s Do It and ‘task’ in Let’s Work It Out were less appropriate if they were seen through the kind of the learning activities selves.

3. The use of subtitles ‘Let’s Do It’ and ‘Let’s Work It Out’ in the

materials were less appropriate if they were considered through the kind of the learning activities. 4. Some pictures were not “Indonesian” context. It would be better to make the picture more “Indonesian”. 5. There were some similar activities in every unit of the designed materials. The writer should make more variations for some similar part in every unit. 7. • The principle of the Natural Approach had not been applied yet in the units. • Some activities were not based on the Natural Approach. • Some activities tended to use Communicative Language Teaching CLT principle instead of the Natural Approach. The writer should make the activities more suitable with the Natural Approach principle. 8. In the Teacher’s Book, the principle of Natural Approach was not explained explicitly. It could make the users teachers might get confused about the role of the Natural Approach principle toward the materials applied in the teaching learning process. It would be better if the writer add more explanation and information about the concept of the Natural Approach in the Teacher’s Book so that the users teachers could understand how to use the materials in teaching and learning process.

2. Final Product Revision

After evaluating the designed material, the writer revised the designed material based on the comments, opinions, criticism and suggestion given by the participants. The description of the revisions is as follows. a. The writer changed some words of the instructions in order to make the instructions more appropriate with the kind of the learning activities such as the word ‘practice’ was changed into ‘read’ for reading activities. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI b. The writer exchanged the words ‘activity’ into ‘task’ in Let’s Do It part and the word ‘task’ into ‘activity’ in Let’s Work It Out part to make them more appropriate with the kind of the learning activities. c. To make it more appropriate with the kind of the learning activities, the writer exchanged the subtitles ‘Let’s Do It’ into “Let’s Work It Out’ and ‘Let’s Work It Out’ into ‘Let’s Do It’ d. The writer made some revisions on the pictures to make them more appropriate with the Indonesian context. e. The writer added more explanation and information about the principle of the Natural Approach in the Teacher’s Book to make the user or the teacher feel clearer about the principle of the Natural Approach and how to use and implement it in the condition of teaching and learning process together with the materials provided. f. The writer revised some grammatical mistakes in the designed material. However, there were three suggestions that the writer did not accept. The first is the suggestion to make the opening activities more various. As presented in the designed materials, the opening activities were almost singing songs. The writer considered that the songs provide input by introducing vocabularies which students will learn. Besides, singing songs in opening activity present interesting and enjoyable exposure to which affective filter can be lowered. Moreover, based on the distributed questionnaire, singing songs is also considered as one of the students’ favourite learning activities. Further, the second suggestion is to make some similar part in every unit also more various. The writer considered that the PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI designed material for each unit was enough for the time allocation of one meeting. The other consideration why the writer did not make revisions for some similar part in every unit was because the materials for each unit were designed as unity. The materials were designed and arranged by stages; that was from simple to complex one. The last is to make the activities more suitable with the Natural Approach principle. The consideration for not accepting this suggestion is, as mentioned before, that the materials were designed and arranged by stages; that was from simple to complex one, from pre-speech stage to extend production stage. To observe the Natural Approach principle in the activities, the activities cannot be seen as one by one activity. Rather, the activities should be seen as unity which contains the Natural Approach principle. Further, to serve each stage, acquisition activities based on the Natural Approach are included in each part of the designed materials. To make it clear, the writer provides the summary of learning stages and the classroom acquisition activities based on the Natural Approach that serve each topic in the designed materials in Table 4.7.
