Alone in teaching and learning activities.
A. Conclusions
Igor is the major character of the novel since he is the center of the story. He is also a dynamic character whose motivation and behavior are complex and
changing. Based on the analysis in chapter 4 before, Igor’s characteristics and the cause and the type of manic-depressive disorder he suffers are concluded as
following: Igor is hard-working. Actually, he is a good example of a person who can
successfully gain what he has hoped, particularly in running a company, becoming a successful businessman and earning much money. Absolutely, his success gives
him much wealth in which he becomes a rich person then. He is capable of doing and buying many things by using his savings. He is also a good-looking person
that he has an elegant charm which capably attracts others’ attention, especially women. Having all what he has dreamed of, he really shows his gratitude to God.
He is a good Christian actually. He absolutely believes that God always blesses all

88 what he does. Unfortunately, he misuses his belief. He becomes excessively
religious. At the time he wants to achieve his mission for getting his wife back, he is completely sure that God will bless him even though he uses abnormal ways
since he believes that God will allow mankind to sacrifice in the name of love. His excessive ambitions of achieving more and more wealth and also getting his ex-
wife back have made him be an obsessive person. Here, he shows manic and depressive disorder regarding the ways he thinks and behaves in order to get what
he desires. He shows the symptoms that indicate he suffers manic depressive disorder.
For manic reaction, he indicates that he has elevated, euphoric, and expansive mood, increasing energy and over-activity, racing thoughts or flight of grandiose
ideas, denial that everything is wrong, great and inflated self-esteem, needing a little sleep, and he is excessively religious and intolerant.
Since he suffers more episodes of mania than depression, he only shows less indication of depressive episode than the manic one. He feels depressed
because of two things: he is really afraid of losing his career and also his wife, but finally he finally cannot maintain both of those things. The indications he shows
that he also suffers the depressive episode are characterized by some of his actions. The actions which are performed as follow; he has difficulty in
concentrating and making decisions, feelings of anxious or empty mood, a feeling of fatigue that he needs more time to sleep or insomnia, changes in appetite, and
decreased energy or power.

89 While for the type, he experiences the mildest type, either of manic or
depressive. The mildest type of mania he suffers is called hypomania. The characteristics are his inconsistency, feeling great, having excessive confidence in
his ability and knowledge, thinking fast, particular amusing and entertaining person, feeling tireless, having many continual activities to do during the day,
having much worthy enthusiasm, having great plans for the future, getting easily irritated, rationalizing his plans or activities and admitting no mistakes, and
spending money recklessly. The mildest type of depression experienced is addressed as a simple
depression. The characteristics he shows are less than the mania one. The characteristics shown are experiencing a slow down thinking process,
unworthiness, sinfulness, and guilt, requiring super and more energy, choosing to be alone to think what he has done, and realizing that he needs treatment.
The characteristics which are performed by Igor can lead and correlate directly to his disorder. It happens because the association between Igor’s
characteristics which can form the way he acts and thinks and then it directly lead to the symptoms of bipolar disorder he suffers. One of example, he is hard-
working. Since he is hard-working and definitely rich, he has many continual bustles or activities that he has to do during the day. He is very busy and he has
many continual activities in one day is one of manic symptoms that he suffers. The bipolar disorder which is experienced by Igor also gives effect to the
plot of his story. It can be caused because of the characteristics of that disorder. One characteristic of manic which is suffered by Igor is inconsistency. Because of

90 his inconsistency, it gives effect to the way he acts and thinks. As a result, it also
influences the story of the novel.
