48 result of actions and experiences. The character appears to reveal the consequences of actions happen. Igor is also described as the major character in the novel since he appears and inhabits within the story frequently and attract the readers’ attention mostly. Besides, Murphy’s theory of characterization 1972, pp. 161-173 is also needed to help in analyzing and studying the main character, Igor, since his theory greatly explains nine ways of how an author has to convey his character and the personalities in order the readers are capable to get good understanding. Those ways are mentioned as follows: personal description, character as seen by another, speech, past life, conversation of others, reactions, direct comment, thoughts, and mannerism.

1. Hard-working

By seeing how Igor desires to always get what he wants, he can be categorized as a hard-working person. It can be seen from the way he gains his success in achieving a high position of his job. It is told that he struggles so hard that he can achieve his ambition to get a successful job. His motive to get what he desires is to prove to himself and others that he can develop and grow more to become he is capable of becoming. This motive belongs to his self-actualization need. Here, he needs to prove that he can do get more and more achievement than he has before. At the time Igor meets a girl named Olivia, he converse and admits to her about his past life. “Yes, love too. But for me it was also important to earn enough money to show my parents that I was capable of succeeding. I met the perfect woman, we married, and I would like to have had children, to honor and fear God. The children, alas, never came.” p. 14 Igor also tells to Olivia that he has struggled and worked so hard that he is able to attain what he has now. Actually, he is a war veteran who has ever fought in a horrific battle, and he has learnt from his experiences. This, then, makes him be a firm and strong individual. He says to Olivia “I worked hard to build up what I have. I worked long and hard, and survived many a setback.” In addition, he also admits that he is a good Christian in which he is always honest and does everything right p. 21. That remark conveyed by him shows that he feels disappointed. He wants to show that he has worked so hard to get what he has dreamed of and keep it on. However, he cannot understand why he cannot maintain all what he desires of, particularly he always wants to be with his ex- wife and build a good and happy family with her, even though it is hard to get her back. Even, his ex-wife, Ewa, still remembers and thinks that Igor is a good person. Since Ewa always knows what he does to gain his success in life, she thinks that he is a firm and integrated person who will always struggle hard to gain what he wants. Despite this, he had overcome all difficulties to succeed. He began to work very hard, getting loans from some very shady people, then lying awake at night, worrying about the risk he was taking and wondering how he could ever repay those loans. He put up uncomplainingly with the endemic corruption, accepting that he would have to bribe a government official each time he needed a new license for a product that would improve the quality of life of his won people. p. 87 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 50 From what Igor says about himself to another, and also what his ex-wife thinks about him, he can be categorized as a hard-working person. He is a successful person because of his hard struggle and effort that make what he dreams of come true.

2. Rich
