53 Table 4.2 Correct translation of NP modified by demonstrative SL TL 1 a. kedua kodok itu the two Frogs b. Setelah beberapa saat kemudian setelah dirasa puas komodo-komodo itu pun meninggalkan perkampungan itu. After several days and the Komodo felt satisfied then they left the village. 2 Namanya Jamilatul Laila, … Her name is Jamilatul Laila, … Correct Translation, Appendix 1 number 3, 90, and 141 Table 4.2 presents some examples of NPs modified by the demonstrative itu. In examples 1a-b, the demonstrative refers to something previously mentioned and definite Sneddon et al., 2010; Macdonald, 1976. The words kodok and perkampungan are previously mentioned in the context. Therefore, the English equivalent of itu is the definite article „the‟ and the NPs are correctly translated into English. The next correct translation is an NP modified by a possessive pronoun, as shown in example 2. The use of proclitic –nya in namanya indicates a possessive expression referring to the third person singular, particularly female person. The NP is correctly translated using a possessive pronoun „her‟. Besides, correct translations are found in NPs modified by RCs and modifying nouns. Table 4.3 Correct translation of NP modified by RC and modifying noun SL TL 3 latihan yang sangat sulit a very difficult exercise 4 Presiden Indonesia ke-4 the fourth President of Indonesia Correct Translation, Appendix 1 number 211 and 274 The noun headword in example 3 is modified by an RC containing a modified ADJ. In INPs, an ADJ can directly follow the noun head, but when it is modified, yang is obligatory to precede the ADJ forming an ADJ RC Sneddon et al., 2010; 54 Macdonald, 1976. This type of postmodifier, an ADJ RC, changes into an English adjectival premodifier, as shown in example 3. Another example is that a noun head modified by a modifying noun and an ordinal number is correctly translated into English, as shown by example 4. Presiden is the noun head, and it is modified by the modifying noun Indonesia and the ordinal number ke-4. The modifying noun turns to be a complement PP in English, which modifies the noun head. Then, the constituent „President of Indonesia‟ is modified by the ordinal number functioning as an ADJ, and the whole NP constituent is preceded by the definite article. Following Radford‟s 1988 theory in Chapter II, the structure of the NP as a whole is presented in Figure 4.1. Figure 4.1 Correct translation of Determiner + Adjunct + Head + Complement Furthermore, correct translations are found in the use of syntactic devices in possessive expression. In INPs, possessors always come after the noun head or the possessee noun. However, in ENPs, possessive construction can be expressed by either the prenominal genitive or postnominal of-construction. Example 5 shows the correct translation of possessive construction found in the translation products of ELESP students batch 2010.
