CHAPTER IV RESEARCH RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter presents the research results and discusses the answer of the research question. The discussion section is divided into three major parts of
syntactic complexities. They are complexity of phrase noun head, complexity of modification, and complexity of genitive and of-construction. Each of the
complexities is discussed as the following.
A. Overview of the Translation Products
Before discussing the syntactic complexities, this section presents the research results. From twelve texts of translation on Indonesian into English, the
total data of NPs found in the translation products of batch 2010 students of ELESP are 1044 numbers. It consists of four main categories, namely correct
translation, complexity of phrase noun head, complexity of modification, and complexity of genitive and of-construction. The numbers of case occurrences in
each category are presented respectively as follows.
Table 4.1 Number of case occurrence Category
Number
Correct translation 406
Complexity of phrase noun head 278
Complexity of modification 314
Complexity of genitive and of-construction 46
Total data 1044
52 The number of correct translations of INPs into ENPs found in the
translation products of batch 2010 students of ELESP is 406. In this category, the NPs are mostly modified by one modifier, such as possessive pronouns or
demonstratives, while some are modified by more than one modifiers from other types of modifiers. Compared to the structure in the category of complexity of
modification, the structure of NPs in the complexity of phrase noun head is simpler, so it is easier to be translated. As a result, the number of correct
translations is slightly higher than that of complexity in modification. The next category is the complexity of phrase noun head numbered 278. The complexity
occurs because the noun heads of the ENPs are different from the INPs. Besides, the case of complexity of modification in the translations is found in 314 NPs.
The reason is that the meaning carried by the modification in the ENPs is not the same as that of the INPs, or the structure of modification in ENPs is structurally
incorrect. In the complexity of modification, the NPs are heavily modified by several modifiers. The last case is the complexity of genitive and of-construction
in possessive expression found in 46 NPs. The syntactic devices to express possession in INPs and ENPs are not the same, so it becomes a particular case of
syntactic complexities in translating NPs.
B. Correct Translation
As many as 406 NPs are correctly translated into English from Indonesian. In this category, the NPs found are mostly modified by possessive pronouns or
demonstratives and the NPs are translated correctly into English.

Correct Translation, Appendix 1 number 3, 90, and 141 Table 4.2 presents some examples of NPs modified by the demonstrative itu. In
examples 1a-b, the demonstrative refers to something previously mentioned and definite Sneddon et al., 2010; Macdonald, 1976. The words kodok and
perkampungan are previously mentioned in the context. Therefore, the English equivalent of itu
is the definite article „the‟ and the NPs are correctly translated into English. The next correct translation is an NP modified by a possessive
pronoun, as shown in example 2. The use of proclitic –nya in namanya indicates
a possessive expression referring to the third person singular, particularly female person. The NP is correctly translated using a
possessive pronoun „her‟. Besides, correct translations are found in NPs modified by RCs and
modifying nouns.

ADJ. In INPs, an ADJ can directly follow the noun head, but when it is modified, yang is obligatory to precede the ADJ forming an ADJ RC Sneddon et al., 2010;
