D. Instrument and Data Gathering Technique

In conducting this discourse analysis research, there was only one major instrument involved. It was 21 st Jump Street movie‟s transcript as the subject document. The researcher employed the transcript to collect the data of the swear words utterances. The transcript, consisted of two hundred and eight pages, and taken from www.subscene.com. In gathering the data, the researcher used coding categories as the technique. Frankel and Wallen 2006 state that apply coding categories is a technique that is used in discourse analysis method. Moreover, Frankel and Wallen 2006 also mention that the researcher could decide the coding categories to get the data. In this study, the researcher made coding categories based on the previous research, knowledge and theories that related to the topic of this study. The following table presented two objectives which became the focus of the study, which were, the types of taboo words and the functions of taboo words. The format of the coding table showed how the researcher answered the first and second research questions of this study. Table 3.1. E. Data Analysis Technique

There were two techniques involved in analyzing data in this study, namely counting and narrative analysis. 1. Counting This technique is a characteristic of discourse analysis research which puts emphasis on counting the frequency of several aspects investigated that would be the research results Frankel Wallen, 2006. Thus, the researcher used counting as the technique to analyze how many times each types of swear words and reasons for swearing found in 21 st Jump Street movie. Moreover, the researcher also used counting to identify the frequency of each types of swear words and reasons for swearing found in 21 st Jump Street movie. For example, the researcher counted how many times cursing and scatology expressions could appear in 21 st Jump Street movie and then the researcher counted all cursing and scatology expressions appeared in 21 st Jump Street movie See appendix 1.
