ANALYSIS OF FATTY ACID COMPOSITION
IN VARIOUS BRAND BATH SOAPS
USING GC-MS
ABSTRACT
Bath soap is generally used as a skin cleanser and there are few coupled with antibacterial substance. Bath soap contains several type of fatty acids with different compositions in each brand. Lauric acid is fatty acid has strong antibacterial properties and composition long chain fatty acids and medium chain ratio of 4:1 is a recommended composition will have a strong detergency. The purpose of this study was to determine composition and ratio of long chain and medium chain in the soap.
The samples used Citra soap, Nuvo, Lux, Lifebuoy and Dettol from one of the supermarkets in Medan. Samples were prepared by the modified method by BSN. After preparation of fatty acids esterified with BF3in methanol with ratio of
1:3 and then analyzed using GC-MS.
The results showed that the composition of fatty acid in soap was different. Generally, all of the soap consists of medium chain fatty acid C8:0
(caprylic acid); C10:0 (capric acid); C12:0 (lauric acid), and long chain C14:0
(myristic acid); C16:0 (palmitic acid); C18:0 (stearic acid); C18:1 (oleic acid), C18:2
Based on the results of research show that soap which has lauric acid is Dettol soap 10.51%, Citra 16.01%, Nuvo 17.50%, Lifebuoy 17.52% and Lux 24.95%. The composition of long and medium chain fatty acid is recommended to be a good quality is 4:1, which the best result is on Citra soap.

(linoleic acid) except Dettol soap there was no caprylic and capric acid. The dominant fatty acids were palmitic, oleic, lauric acid, 29.31 43.22%, 22.01 -33.77%, 10.51 - 24.95% respectively. Ratio of long chain fatty acids and medium chain on each soap were Lux (2.1:1), Lifebuoy (2.3:1), Nuvo (3.5:1), Citra soap
(4:1), and Dettol (8.5:1).
