B. Competency Standard, Basic Competences, and Topics
After knowing the students’ characteristics, the writer was to state the competency standard, basic competence, and the topics for the design of the
materials. In this study, the term competency standard was used instead of the goal, and the term basic competences instead of the general purposes. The
competency standard and the basic competences used in this study were taken from School-Based Curriculum SBC. The purpose of competency standard was
used for deciding what kind of performances the students should be able to perform at the end of the instruction. The competency standard for the design of
the materials was to understand meaning in transactional and interpersonal conversation in the context of daily life.
Since the topics of the design of the materials were taken from the basic competences in SBC, the writer was to list the basic competences before listing
the topics. The basic competences for the first semester of the tenth grade students which were taken from SBC are stated as follows:

and giving instruction. The next step was to list the topics. The topics for the design of the
materials were chosen from the basic competences in SBC. There were four topics chosen which were included in four units. Table 4.6 presents the units, topics, and
titles for the design of the materials.
