49 In excerpt 28, the student felt that her attitudes became more positive. The
student mentioned that she did her best when she worked together with her friends.
“It also made me to be hard worker to achieve my goal. It is very useful which it can be developed and kept as mental development. In every my
activities I will work hard, although it is very difficult to be done .” –
Excerpt 29 Another student wrote that the positive attitudes she felt as the
contribution of collaborative learning in Play Performance class made the student become a hard worker to achieve her goal.
c. Critical Thinking
Collaborative learning also contributed to students’ critical thinking. Johnson, James, Lye, and McDonald 2000 state that students encourage and
develop their critical thinking through the process of problem solving. The following excerpts
contained the student’s reflections on the contributions of collaborative learning in Play Performance class.
“Play performance allows me to use my creativity like in making and deciding on the costume and choosing the accessories. This will be very
useful for me during my learning process. Learning English requires my creativity
.” – Excerpt 30 The student wrote in her reflection paper that she was allowed to use her
creativity while working on the problem and the task of her division. Johnston et al. 2000 state in their theory that the critical thinking appears and develops
through the process of problem solving as cited in Lin, 2015 . In the student’s
excerpt, the problem she faced was in making and deciding on the costume and PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

developed her skills in critical thinking. “Join Play Performance class truly gives me a unique impression of how a
goal can be achieved through very interesting and creative way, combining various resources to create a mind blowing outcome and organize it under
the cooperation of people with various backgrounds and thoughts, plant the meaningful values of life by a real action and cooperation, create a
strong bond between students by working together, being tired together, laughing over each other, having a headache to think about money and
finally to each individual those things will lead to the complete understanding and skill to not to just be a teacher but to be a good teacher,
actoractress and person who is well equipped to be the better member of society along with the cooperation, organization and interaction gained
through the Play Performance Class preparation
.” – Excerpt 31 The collaborative learning contribution to critical thinking was also shown
by another student in excerpt 31. The student did not directly mention about the contribution to his critical thinking skills, but the student explained it in a detail
way through the excerpt that the collaboration needed critical thinking, especially in producing a successful performance
. Somehow, it developed the students’ critical thinking.
d. Problem Solving
Collaborative learning in Play Performance class contributed to students’
problem solving. The students learned how to solve a problem and how to develop their problem solving skills. The contributions received by the students could be
seen in excerpts 32, 33 and 34. “Overall, from Play Performance class, I have been learning so many
things as I have to learn how to work with other people and cope with some problems
.” – Excerpt 32 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
51 “The experiences of working with my group help me to have problem
solving ability because we need to solve the problems soon to make the team work effectively
.” - Excerpt 33 In excerpts 32 and 33, the students wrote about solving the problems or
coping with the problems. According to Johnson 1971 and Peterson Swing 1985, when students work in pairs, there is one person who listen and another
person discuss the question as cited in Laal Ghodsi, 2012. In excerpt 32, the student mentioned that she learned to cope with some problems and learned how
to work with other people. By working with their peers in the group, the student learned how to formulate their ideas and discuss them. While in excerpt 33, the
student mentioned that working with group helped her to have problem solving skill because they needed to solve the problems. By learning to solve the
problems, the student unconsciously developed her problem solving skills. “This subject also teach us on how to handle something when it goes
wrong. How to always make a plan B, if the major plan cannot be done .” –
Excerpt 34 In excerpt 34, the student did not clearly state in her reflection paper that
collaborative learning contributed to her problem solving. However, the researcher interpreted that
the student’s excerpt contained the collaborative learning contribution in problem solving. In excerpt 34, the problem solving was
showed by the student through her explanation on how they learned to handle an incident when their plan went wrong. They tried to solve the problem by making
another plan, such as plan B if the major plan could not be done. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
