2. Social Benefits

In this part, the researcher discussed the contributions of collaborative learning perceived by students in their social aspect. The contributions of collaborative learning in social aspects perceived by the students toward students’ communication skills, social skills, team work skills, and personality development.

a. Communication Skills

The researcher found that through collaborative learning in Play Performance class, the students perceived that collaborative learning had a contribution to communication skills of the students. The researcher found this contribution was perceived by the students from their excerpt in their reflection paper. “It is because this project is proceeded along one semester, during the production process I also communicate a lot with one another. That way my communication skill is improved. Sometimes when I discussed the costume or other things related to Play Performance production and talked to friends, it did not go well. But, it made me learns to find a way and solve problems, so I could communicate with other better. It accustoms me to be able to communicate with others well in my daily life .” – Excerpt 35 In excerpt 35, the student wrote that along with the process of working in her group, the student communicated a lot with one another. The student also needed to try to convey the message clearly in order to make her friends understand about the idea. It made her communication skills improved. “It was really hard to be communicative in front of others and it is hard to be a good listener. It was happened when I was introducing my rundown, I made that rundown and I remembered all of the activities there but then 53 when I had to present it in front of the other friends I felt like it is so hard so I looked like did not make it on my own. Otherwise, my other friends who did not help me to make it she could answer the questions clearly. It was annoying. Yes, I realized that my communication skill is so bad. That was true. But then I did not want the other thought that I was not contribute to this event so I started to learn how to be communicative in front of other people. I started to be more communicative in front of people. I started to talk clearly and explain the rundown on by one so it was clear. I was so thankful because it made my communication skill improve .” – Excerpt 36 In excerpt 36, the student wrote about her experience. It was when the student tried to explain and introduce the rundown of the event for the play performance to her peers. However, the student felt the difficulty in explaining it to others. It made her look like the student who did not work properly in her division and did not make the rundown by herself, where the fact was she made it. It was because of the difficulty she had in explaining the rundown. However, because of the student’s experience, the student learned how to be communicative. The student started to talk clearly and explained the rundown one by one. Collaborative le arning in Play Performance class had improved the student’s communication skills. 1 Speaking Skills Pandian, Cakravarthy, and Lah 2003, state that collaborative learning can gather the students’ courage to speak up. Moreover, Osman et al 2010 find that students’ speaking skills are improved. The researcher found that the contributions of collaborative learning to students’ speaking skills were varied. The students stated the contributions were on pronunciation skills , student’s way in producing
