41 1 = The respondents strongly disagree with the statement given. 2 = The respondents disagree with the statement given. 3 = The respondents has no opinion with the statement given. 4 = The respondents agree with the statement given. 5 = The respondents strongly agree with the statement given. The questions were achieved to identify: a. The relevancy of the designed speaking materials usage to the level of certain subject in certain program b. The influence of the designed speaking materials to the development of speaking skill and student’s motivation To analyze the data from closed questionnaire, descriptive statistics, in this case measurements of central tendency or average were employed. The measurements of central tendency give a way of describing a set of statistical data. The measure is known as the mean and other central tendency measure is called the mode and median. The mean is the sum of all the values in a distribution divided by number of cases. The median is the middle score of a distribution and the mode is the score which occur mostly in a distribution Ari, Jacobs and Razavieh, 2002: 126. The mean was formulated as follows: X = Σx N note: X : mean Σx : sum of scores in a distribution N : number of scores 42

C. RESEARCH PROCEDURES

In conducting the research so as to attain the expected results, there were some systematic steps or procedures to be done in this research. The following steps were as follows: 1. Getting permission to conduct study in SMA Stella Duce 1 Yogyakarta. 2. Doing interview with the English teachers and distributing open-closed questionnaire to the second grade of language program students at Senior High School to gain information about the students’ background and needs in English learning. 3. Collecting the open-closed questionnaires from the students of second grade of language program in SMA Stella Duce 1 Yogyakarta. 4. Analyzing the data from the questionnaires. 5. Designing a set of instructional speaking materials using CTL. 6. Distributing the closed questionnaires and the original version of the designed materials to the second grade of language program English teachers in SMA Stella Duce 1 Yogyakarta and English lecturers of Language Education Program in Sanata Dharma University. 7. Collecting the closed questionnaires from the second grade of language program English teacher in SMA Stella Duce 1 Yogyakarta and lecturers of Sanata Dharma University 8. Analyzing the data from the questionnaires. 9. Revising the original version of the designed materials. 10. Presenting the final version of the designed materials.
