In your opinion, what kinds of activity that helps the students to learn speaking in order to apply what they have learned in their society? Any kinds of activity, as long as the students understand the use of what they have learned in their society. 15. In your opinion, what kinds of media that helps the students to learn speaking in order to apply what they have learned in their society? Any kinds of media such as pictures, flash cards, real world problems for discussion, and the like.

c. The Needs Survey Data Analysis

Based on the questionnaire taken from the students who are the subject of learning, the writer found some information that were important to identify students’ wants and needs in English learning. The descriptions of the students’ opinions were as follows: 1 The Description of Students’ Background provided in questions 1-3 In question number one, the writer asked the students the reason they chose to enter the language program. There were so many reasons provided by the students. Ninety seven percent students opted for language program because they liked it and thought that it was important for their future; three percent students answered that they had no choice to enter another program such as science or social program. In question number two, the writer asked the students whether or not they liked and had interest in learning English. The result of the questionnaire showed that ninety four percent students who entered language program liked and had interest in learning English since they thought that learning English was fun and interesting. In addition, by learning English, they could easily find a job. On the other hand, six percent students were not really interested in learning English because they thought it was a difficult process. In question number three, the writer required to know what was the use of English regarding their opinion. The results of the questionnaire conveyed that PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 48 eighty eight percent students thought that English was used for media to communicate with foreigner. Another answer showed that English was used as a skill needed in finding a job provided by eighty eight percent students. Eighty five percent students assumed that English was used as a media to access information. Fourteen percent students considered that English was used as a media to obtain scholarship and have fun. 2 Students’ Opinions toward Speaking Activity in Classroom provided in questions 4-7 In question number four, the writer asked the students whether the English materialstextbook had given them much chance to practice speaking. The results of the questionnaire conveyed that forty percent students considered that the English materialstextbook had given them much chance to practice speaking. On contrary, sixty percent students considered that the materialstextbook had not given them much chance to practice speaking. As well as the materials, in question number five, the writer also asked whether the learning activities in classroom had given them much chance to practice speaking. Twenty nine percent students stated that the learning activities in classroom had given them much chance to practice English. Conversely, seventy one percent students answered that the learning activities in classroom had not given them much chance to practice English. In question number six, the writer wanted to know about kinds of activity in classroom that had already given the students chance to practice speaking. Sixty percent students stated that problem solving and presentation were the activities that gave them much chance to speak. Forty two percent students believed that group discussion made them trigger to speak. Thirty four percent students answered games PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 49 and twenty five percent students answered role play. In question number seven, the writer asked the students whether they could relate the topics given to their background knowledge. The results of the answer showed that eighty one percent students agreed that the topics given were always related to their background knowledge so it could them to do the practice. In contrast, Nineteen percent students did not agree that the topics given were not constantly related to their background knowledge, because some of the topics given were difficult and unfamiliar for them. The Descriptions of Students’ Lack in Learning Speaking provided in question 8 In question number eight, the writer asked the students the difficulties they had found in learning speaking. There were so many difficulties the students still found in learning English. Seventy one percent students affirmed that they did not know how to express their opinions or ideas in English. Fifty four percent students believed that the problem occurred because they had lack of sufficient English vocabulary. Eleven percent students answered that they could not understand the topics given like unfamiliar topics. 3 The Descriptions of Students’ Preference in Learning Speaking provided in questions 9-12 In the attempt to provide the designed materials that could attract students’ interest in learning speaking, the writer aimed to know the kinds of task, topic and materials that they were willing to learn. In question number nine, the writer asked the students about the kinds of task which could attract their interest in learning speaking. The result of the questionnaire showed that sixty five percent students PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 50 chose games as the most favorite activity in classroom. Fifty seven percent students answered role play; forty two percent students answered problem solving; forty two percent students answered presentation group discussion and seven percent students added other activities such story telling and singing as the activity which could draw their interest in learning English. In question number ten, the writer asked about kinds of topics that the students were interested in learning. The result showed that sixty percent students enjoyed learning the topics which was up to date. Ninety one percent students chose interesting and understandable topics to learn. Being easy to learn, forty five percent students had interest to learn topics which were related to their background knowledge. In question number eleven, the writer also aimed to know the description of the materials that the students preferred. The result of the questionnaire conveyed that seventy seven percent students liked interesting topics in speaking materials. Sixty eight percent students preferred materials that brought new knowledge. Fifty seven percent students believed that many speaking practices were important for the speaking materials. Five percent students answered that they preferred more fluency practice in learning speaking. Finally, as result of question number twelve, the writer found the top five topics chosen by the students. The students selected the topics in accordance with the themes offered. Those chosen topics were Going Global, Back to Nature, It’s All about Money, Be Positive, and TV Media.
