a. Transitive Verbs Constructed with Pattern 4 in the Active Voice
There were 6 active transitive verbs found in clauses constructed with Kolln’s pattern 4. The following clause in Table 4.8 was chosen in order to see
the pattern.

The clause “Many soldiers saw the Indonesians as underdog” was
considered as transitive and constructed with the transitive verb pattern 4. The clause was analyzed based on the pattern as follows.

The noun phrase many soldiers functioned as the subject of the clause. The phrase saw was the transitive verb. The phrase the Indonesians was the
direct object. The phrase underdog renamed the direct object; it meant to say that the phrase underdog described the Indonesians. In addition, the noun phrases
the Indonesians and underdog referred to the same things. Therefore, the clause
46 employed transitive verb pattern 4. Table 4.8 illustrates the findings of this
pattern.
a. Transitive Verbs Constructed with Pattern 4 in the Passive Voice
There were 8 transitive verbs constructed with the transitive verb pattern 4 in the passive voice. Table 4.9 illustrates the findings of this pattern.

The clause “the Tan Malaka-ist Djamaludin Tamin was elected Chairman” was taken to be discussed. Azar 1999: 208 highlights that passive
voice contains transitive verb. The clause was considered as transitive because there was a transitive verb in the clause.
It was necessary to change the form into active voice since the clause was written in passive voice. Azar 1999: 208-211 states that the subject of a passive
verb will be the object of the verb when it is changed into active. Moreover, when there is no object in the passive form, it means that the object is not really
important to be mentioned. The active voice , based on Azar’s theory, would be
“People elected Djamaludin Tamin Chairman.” The following pattern was used to prove that the clause in active voice employed the pattern 4.

Based on the pattern, the phrase people functioned as the subject of the clause. The phrase elected was the transitive verb. Djamaludin Tamin was the
direct object and the phrase chairman gave additional information about the direct object. Moreover, Djamaludin Tamin and Chairman referred to the same
things. It meant that the clause also employed the pattern 4. As a final point of the research result and discussion, there were 170
transitive verbs found in the bilingual book. The findings were presented in the form of list containing English transitive verbs and their patterns. The list was
attached in the appendix 1.
B. Strategies to Translate the Transitive Verbs in
Reid’s Book
The text analyzed in this study was a kind of informative text. Reiss, as cited in Munday 2008: 72, states that informative text should represent objects
and facts discussed. Moreover, the language dimension of this text should be logical and referential in order to transmit the information. The book contains an
informative text according to Reiss’ theory. The translation type applied in this study, according to Jakobson as cited in
Bassnett 2002: 23, was translation proper or interlingual translation since it was
