37 Kolln 1990: 18-25 mentions four transitive verb patterns, namely
patterns 1 NP

-Vt-NP

The patterns used in clauses with transitive verbs were patterns 1, 2, and 4. The writer found those three transitive verb patterns in the book.
Therefore, the discussion of the transitive verbs found in Reid’s book was
divided into three sections. The first section is the discussion of transitive verb pattern 1; the second section is the discussion based on pattern 2 and the last
section is about pattern 4. The discussion of each section is presented as follows.
1. The Use of Pattern 1: NP
1
-Vt-NP
2
Kolln 1990: 19 states that the first pattern can be formulated as NP
1
-Vt- NP
2.
It means to say that there are two noun phrases NP; the first noun phrase occurs before the verb while the second noun phrase follows the verb. Kolln
1990 adds that those noun phrases do not refer to the same things. Moreover, the second noun phrase is the direct object. Table 4.1 illustrates the findings of
transitive verbs constructed with pattern 1.

a. Transitive Verbs Constructed with Pattern 1 in the Active Voice
There were 101 active transitive verbs constructed with pattern 1 based on the research findings. The following data representatives were found in
Reid’s book.

1 understand The Australians

Orang Australia lebih mengerti tentang kita

2 have
The Indonesians feel that they
have friendly neighbours in
Australia. mempunyai Orang Indonesia merasa
mempunyai tetangga yang bersahabat di Australia.
The word understand in the clause “The Australians understand us
better than Europeans do ” was considered as active transitive clause based on
Kolln’s pattern. The clause was subcategorized into four parts based on the grammatical function of each phrase in the clause as follows.
The Australians understand
us better than
Europeans do
NP
1
Vt NP
2
adverb
The Australians was the NP
1
; the noun phrase functioned as the subject
of the clause. The word understand functioned as the transitive verb in the clause since it was followed by us which functioned as the direct object. Moreover, the
noun phrases The Australians and us did not refer to the same things. Hence, the
39 verb in the clause was categorized as a transitive verb constructed with pattern 1.
The phrase better than Europeans do functioned as the adverb of manner.
Another example of transitive verb constructed with Kolln’s pattern 1 wa
s the clause “they have friendly neighbours in Australia.” The verb have was
considered as transitive verb because it was followed by a direct object. It was the same as the first example in table 4.2. The analysis of the clause was presented as
follows. They
have friendly
neighbours in Australia
NP
1
Vt NP
2
adverb
The personal pronoun they functioned as the subject of the clause. That was the reason why they was labeled as NP
1.
The noun phrase friendly neighbours NP
2
functioned as the direct object; it received the action of the verb
have. Moreover, the NP
1
and NP
2
referred to two different things. Considering
Kolln’s rule of transitivity, the verb have was categorized as a transitive verb
because it showed the action done by NP
1
while NP
2
received the action.
