CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter consists of six sections, namely the research method, research setting, data source, research instrument and data gathering technique, data
analysis technique, and research procedure. The method elaborates the suitable method to answer the research questions. The setting informs when the research is
conducted. The data source elaborates the subject of this study. The instrument and data gathering technique section explains the instruments used to collect the
data in this study. The data analysis technique provides the explanation of the instrument use in order to obtain the research findings. The last part, the research
procedure, explains steps taken by the writer in order to do this study. The elaboration of each section of this chapter is presented as follows.
A. Research Method
The focus of this study was on the transitive verb translation and the translation strategies used in Anthony Re
id’s Australia and Indonesia’s Struggle for Independence
O’Hare Reid, 2005. Two research problems were formulated, namely 1 Based on transitive verb patterns, what are the English
transitive verbs and their Indonesian translation in Reid’s book? 2 What
translation strategies are used to translate the transitive verbs in Reid’s book?
30 Document analysis was applied to solve the research problems in this
study. Ary, Jacobs, and Sorensen 2010: 457 define a document analysis as “a
research method applied to written and visual materials for the purpose of identifying specified characteristics of the material.” The materials that can be
analyzed are textbooks, newspapers, web pages, speeches, or any kinds of documents. This study applied document analysis as the method because the
subject of this study was a written material in the form of textbook. The study focused on the analysis of the first chapter of the book.
B. Research Setting
The analysis of Reid’s book was started on February 3
rd
, 2014 until October 17
th
, 2014. The writer spent eight months in analyzing the book. The process of the data analysis consisted of identifying transitive verbs and their
translation found in the book, analyzing the translation strategies, and writing up the report of this study.
C. Data Source
The data source was the bilingual book entitled Australia and Indonesia’s
Struggle for Independence O’Hare Reid, 2005. The clauses consisting of
transitive verbs and their Indonesian translation were taken as the data of this study. The data was taken from the article in the first chapter of the book because
the book only consisted of two chapters. The first chapter consisted of paragraphs or informative texts while the second chapter only consisted of pictures.
