33 In order to answer the second research question, the context in which the
transitive verbs occurred was considered. First, the writer considered the context in which transitive verbs occurred. Then, she considered the verb translation in
Indonesian language. Finally, she analyzed the strategies used to translate the transitive verbs. The analysis was based on the strategies proposed by Newmark
1988.
F. Research Procedure
The research procedure provided an explanation about the steps taken to do this study. The steps were elaborated as follows.
1. Planning
This step was adapted from Fraenkel and Wallen 2009: 474-475. It consisted of deciding topic, determining objectives and specifying the unit of
analysis. First, the writer decided to do this study on translation product. The translation product which the writer chose to analyze was a bilingual book
consisting of articles in the English and Indonesian languages. The study aimed to find out strategies to translate verbs in the functional text. In order to come up
with the aim, the writer decided the unit of analysis on transitive verbs. The writer chose the analysis of English transitive verbs and their Indonesian
translation in the bilingual book. Then, the writer made a research proposal.

2. Analyzing Chapter One of the Book
The writer analyzed the first chapter of the book in order to collect the data related to transitive verbs. The writer identified English verbs in the first
chapter by analyzing the clauses with the transitive patterns; the patterns were NP

. The clauses which employed the patterns were taken as data. The data collected, then,
were analyzed in order to come up with the answer to the two research questions of this study.
3. Identifying Indonesian Translation of the Transitive Verbs
This step was taken in order to solve the first research problem. Since the English transitive verbs had been obtained, the writer had to find out the
Indonesian translation of those verbs. The writer looked at the English clauses in which the transitive verbs occurred. Then, the writer found the clauses in
Indonesian version. After that, the writer took the translation of the transitive verbs and put them into a table.
4. Identifying the Translation Strategies
The writer employed the strategies proposed by Newmark 1988. The strategies are the literal translation, transference, naturalization, cultural
equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, synonymy, through- translation, shift or transposition, modulation, recognized translation, translation
label, compensation, compensational analysis, reduction and expansion, and
35 paraphrase. Each English transitive verb and its Indonesian translation were
examined in order to decide the strategy used to translate the word.
