considers her works are not substantial. Artsy is one of the stereotypes that can be considered as a good stereotype, but it does not make women feel equal to men. In
the novel, Beauty’s artistic quality does not help her to gain her independence and freedom. She even feels shy about it. She feels afraid to show her paintings to her
father because her father criticizes it instead of appreciates it. Thus, artsy stereotyping does not make women feel equal instead it can make women feel inferior.
f. Women are Stereotyped as Clumsy
Patriarchal society believes that men are more capable than women in many aspects. Men think that women are not good in doing anything except doing domestic
works. It makes them attributed with one of the stereotypes; that is women are clumsy, even if women themselves are good in doing their tasks. In Cookie, B
eauty’s father thinks that Beauty is clumsy. Therefore, he forces Beauty to go to ballet class.
‘Whoopsie’ said Dad, catching me. ‘Dear goodness, Beauty You’re so clumsy I think we’d better send you back to those dancing lessons.’
…
‘Please don’t make me do ballet again, Dad’ I said.
‘Don’t you want to learn to dance like a little fairy?’ said Dad. ‘Fairy elephant, more like,’ I said. Wilson, 2016: 14
The datum above maintains to say that Beauty’s father thinks she is clumsy because she is not capable in managing her figure to stand properly. She almost falls when she
dances with her father. Then, her father insists on sending her to a ballet class even though that mishap is only happened accidentally.
The stereotyping that labels women as clumsy also makes women are easily blamed for something that they do. In the novel, Beauty’s mother blames her from
burning her own hands when Beauty tries to take out the baking pan. I put on an oven glove and pulled the baking tray out of the oven. I picked
up the me-cookie even though it was red hot and snapped off its stupid head.
‘Hey hey, stop it, Beauty Don’t burn yourself. And stop spoiling them. Wilson, 2016: 109
The quotation above is an example how Beauty is labeled as clumsy. She picks up the hot baking tray from the oven and tries to pick the cookies she made. Her mother asks
her to stop anything that she does because it will make herself burned and spoils the cookies. This kind of stereotyping makes women underestimated. People will think
that women are incapable in doing something and they think that women will make something become worse. It happens because people believe that women are clumsy.
Patriarchal society that believes women are clumsy makes women feels insecure for the mistakes that they will made. In the novel, Beauty feels afraid
because father will be mad at her if he knows Beauty breaks her expensive mirror.
‘I am in such trouble,’ I whispered. ‘Dad always goes totally mad if I break anything, even if it’s a total accident. When he sees the mirror
he’ll realize I threw the brush on purpose.’ Wilson, 2016: 98
The datum above shows that Beauty feels afraid when she breaks the mirror in her
bedroom. It happens when Beauty tries to express her anger towards her father by throwing her brush, but it accidentally hits the mirror. She believes that she is clumsy
when she breaks the mirror. She is afraid her father will think she does it on purpose. Thus, it shows that Beauty has troubled herself for being clumsy. In conclusion,
stereotyping women as clumsy is very dangerous, because it underestimates women’s ability and capability to do something. Society thinks that women are less capable by
judging and believing the stereotype that is already created in a patriarchal society.
