Blades 10-30 cm by 1-3 mm. Inflorescence a contracted panicle, 5-20 cm long, oblong, interupted; panicle branches scaberulous. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled, comprising 10-25 fertile florets, with diminished florets at the apex; linear, laterally compressed, 5-18 mm long, breaking up maturity; rachilla persitent; retaining paleas; rachilla internodes 0.5 mm long. Glumes similar, deciduos, shorter than spikelet. Lower glume 1-1.5 mm long, lanceolate, almost as long as upper glume, membraneous, 1-keeled, 1-nerved, primary lateral nerves absent, apex acute. Upper glume as long as lower glume, 0.5 length of adjacent fertile lemma, membraneous, 1- keeled, 1-nerved, primary nerves scaberulous, lateral nerves absent, apex acute. Florets: fertile florets free at tip, increasing in size upwards; fertile lemma ovate, lanceolate, 2-3 mm long, keeled, 3-nerved; lemma midnerve scaberulous, apex acuminate, muticuous, or awned; principal lemma awn up to 1.5 mm long. Palea 0.5 length of lemma, 2-nerved, keels ciliolate. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped. Anthers 3. Caryopsis with adherent pericarp, ellipsoid.
