44 hour for doing one assignment. The second learning technique deals with individual learning in students’ learning process. In this learning technique, the teacher did not facilitate and give answer to students’ question about the content of the text or about difficult words they found in the text. The teacher only facilitated and gave answer to students’ questions which deal with instructions of the assignment. After students finished the assignment of answering comprehension questions, the teacher explained to class how to find an answer of a certain question in the reading text. The teacher also explained how to find a meaning of a difficult or a new word in the text. To make his explanation clearer, the teacher gave students an example in finding the answers of questions and meanings of difficult or new words. The teacher told students that the answer of their problem must be located written around clues students have. The clues can be in the forms of question words, things being asked, and the difficult or new words. The answers of the problems can be stated before or after the clues in the text.

2. The Teacher’s Reasons for Conducting the Learning Techniques

This part presents data which were collected through interview with the teacher. The researcher conducted the interview after he finished conducting all direct observations. Before presenting the teacher’s reasons for applying the learning activities, the researcher briefly presents the research findings on learning activities conducted by the teacher, which discussion of this part is based on. In teaching reading class, the teacher applies learning activities of: Introducing the Lesson, Comprehending a Text, Translation, Comparing English Texts, Outside Classroom Activities, and Independent Learning. 45 The following part presents the teacher’s reasons in applying the learning activities. The researcher divides this part into six parts based on the number of the learning activities presented before.

a. The Teacher’s Reason for the Learning Technique of Introducing the

Lesson The first is about the teacher’s reasons for explaining learning activities students were going to have. The teacher stated that he explains what learning activities students are going to have because he wanted every student to know what they are going to do in learning. In his opinion, when students know what they should do in learning they will not miss any information or activities in learning. The teacher also wanted students to be ready to follow the learning activities along with required tools or equipment needed in the learning activities.

b. The Teacher’s Reason for the Learning Technique of Comprehending a

Text For the learning technique of comprehending a text, there were several kinds of learning technique conducted by the teacher. All learning activities are employed to help students in comprehending an English text. The first activity was answering comprehension questions and composing interrogative sentences with WH question words. The teacher stated that these two learning activities have the same purpose; these learning activities aimed to help students to comprehend the text deeper. The teacher, therefore, took this purpose as his reason for asking students to answer comprehension questions and to compose interrogative sentences with WH question words.
