In Table 4.5, there are 11 assertive categories, 1 commissive category, 5 directive categories, and only 1 expressive category. Similar to the idea of previous
themes, assertive category is the most frequently employed speech act category, followed by directive category in the second position. Then, commissive and
expressive category are in the third position. As the typical characteristic of TYS column in the theme, all texts are expressed using assertive category. When the text
has more than one speech act category, assertive category always accompanies other categories in the text. All text writers prefer to commit themselves to the truth
of the proposition in giving the opinions. The text writers support the government to solve the haze problem. They prefer to explain the effects of the haze and give
the solution to solve the haze problem. The researcher provides the example of findings in the following page.
44 23
TE.39 The thick haze disrupting the northern part of Indonesia and neighboring
countries occurs almost annually. The President himself has to handle this serious matter and find a suitable solution. It seems that the local
government, governors, regents and the police are of no use in this matter and they have chosen to put their hands up. To spend billions on consumer
goods is preferable compared to solving their own problems.
The text has three speech act categories in one text. Those are assertive, directive, and expressive categories. It is clear that the assertive category
accompanies other speech act categories in the text. The text writer gives the explanation that the haze has disturbed northern Indonesia and neighboring
countries. He shows the assertive category in the first sentence. He hopes the readers believe the fact. The text writer also uses directive category in the second
sentence. The speaker commands the President to handle and give solution. He wants the President to do an action. Through the expressive category in the last two
sentences, the text writer shares his feeling about the issue. He is disappointed that local governments prefer to spend billions in consumer goods better than solve the
problem.
