1.1 Latar Belakang

Indonesia memiliki lahan basah yang luasnya lebih dari 38 juta hektar atau 21 dari luas daratannya, dan merupakan negara dengan lahan basah terluas di Asia. Lahan basah tersebut meliputi danau, hutan bakau, hutan rawa gambut, hutan rawa pasang surut air tawar dan lain-lainnya yang sebagian besar dapat ditemukan di dataran rendah aluvial dan lembah-lembah sungai, muara sungai dan daerah pesisir di pulau Sumatera, Kalimantan dan Irian Jaya. Hilangnya lahan basah akibat pengelolaan yang tidak bijaksana, menyebabkan turunnya keanekaragaman hayati secara drastis Nirarita et al. 1996. Rawa ialah suatu bagian daratan, yang sepanjang tahun biasanya jenuh air atau tergenang air Barchia 2006. Menurut Subagyo 1997, lahan rawa adalah lahan yang menempati posisi peralihan di antara daratan dan sistem perairan. Lahan ini sepanjang tahun atau selama waktu yang panjang dalam setahun selalu jenuh air waterlogged atau tergenang. Selanjutnya menurut Peraturan Pemerintah No. 27 Tahun 1991 tentang rawa yang dinamakan lahan rawa adalah genangan secara alami yang terjadi terus menerus atau musiman akibat drainase yang terhambat dan mempunyai ciri-ciri khusus baik fisik, kimiawi maupun biologis. Genangan ini terjadi secara alamiah seperti pembentukan gambut, genesis gambut di Indonesia dimulai dari periode holosen yang dimulai dengan terbentuknya rawa-rawa sebagai akibat dari peristiwa transgresi dan regresi karena mencairnya es di kutub yang terjadi sekitar 4200 sampai 6800 tahun yang lalu Sabiham 1988. Pada periode pleistosen, yaitu periode sebelum holosen, permukaan laut berada kira-kira 60 m di bawah permukaan laut sekarang. Pendapat lain mengatakan gambut ombrogen di Indonesia mulai terbentuk pada 4000 sampai 5000 tahun yang lalu. Pembentukan gambut di Indonesia terutama di Sumatra dan Kalimantan terjadi pada penghujung masa glacial dimana pencairan es menyebabkan peningkatan muka air laut dan Sunda Shelf tergenang oleh air membentuk rawa-rawa Barchia 2006. Akan tetapi ada juga genangan yang terbentuk akibat ulah manusia seperti permasalahan penataan lahan bekas tambang yang tidak tepat yang mengakibatkan timbulnya genangan secara periodik Mansur 2010. Saat ini, pada hutan rawa gambut di Indonesia ditemukan sekitar 60 jenis pohon yang mempunyai nilai ekonomis sebagai pohon penghasil kayu untuk bahan bangunan. Jenis yang umum digunakan antara lain ramin Gonystylus bancanus, meranti Shorea sp., durian Durio carinatus, nyatoh Palaquium sp., kempas Koompassia malaccensis, pulai Alstonia sp., terentang Campnospernum sp., bintangur Calophyllum sp. Barchia 2006. Dalam penelitian ini jenis yang digunakan adalah longkida Nauclea orientalis, kayu putih Melaleuca leucadendron, Akasia Acacia mangium, dan Jati Tectona grandis. Dari karekteristik tumbuhnya, longkida memiliki kemampuan menyerap air yang sangat besar, sehingga memiliki potensi untuk dikembangkan pada lahan tergenang secara temporal, di sekitar badan sungai ataupun di kawasan rawan banjir. Kayu longkida banyak digunakan untuk bahan konstruksi. Saat ini, longkida belum banyak ditanam, karena pemanfaatannya yang belum berkembang luas. Kayu putih selain memiliki manfaat kayu sebagai kayu bakar, daunnya juga dapat dimanfaatkan karena mengandung minyak atsiri, melihat tempat tumbuhnya, kayu putih dapat dikembangkan pada lahan basah. Akasia memiliki karakteristik tumbuh yang mudah, akasia dikenal dengan jenis yang dapat tumbuh pada kondisi apapun. Pada saat ini, penggunaan akasia pada lahan basah belum banyak dilakukan. Jati digunakan sebagai kontrol pada penelitian ini, karena salah satu syarat tumbuh jati adalah pada lahan yang memiliki drainase baik. Luasnya lahan basah di Indonesia, baik yang terjadi secara alami maupun buatan yang sangat luas dan masih sedikitnya penelitian tentang tanaman kehutanan yang mampu beradaptasi di lahan tergenang maka perlu melakukan penelitian dengan jenis tanaman di atas, sehingga informasi pemanfaatan lahan basah dengan jenis pohon yang adaptif semakin banyak.
