THE NATIONAL SPORT CHAMPIONSHIP The biggest national sports event in our country is the PON. PON stands for Pekan Olahraga
Nasional, the National Sport Championship. The PON is held every two years at first, but afterwards they are held every four years. Any city can be the host of the PON as long as it is able to hold them. The
participants are the amateur athletes from all provinces in our country. The participants must process certain qualifications before they are allowed to participate in the PON. The prizes for the winners are
gold, silver and bronze medals. The champions and the runners-up have a good chance to take part in the SEA Games, Asian Games or Olympic Games.
The first PON was held in Solo in 1949. Not all athletes of all provinces participated. The participants were only the athletes from Java. It was because our country still defended our independence
from the Dutch invasion. Nevertheless, the total of the athletes and the officials were not less than six hundred in number and the Sriwedari stadium was crowded by spectators’ everyday.
At each new PON there are an opening and a closing ceremony. In the opening ceremony the activities are the lighting of the PON torch, the raising of the PON flag, and the parade of the participants
and the reading of the PON oath. The kinds of sports held in the PON may be divided into two groups; the athletics which consists
of track events and field events, and games such as volleyball, football, softball, boxing and tennis. Track events are foot race: 100 m dash, 200 m dash recognized as sprinting, 400 m run, 400 m
relay, hurdling etc. Field events are javelins, discuss, and hammer throwing, long and high jumping, pole vaulting, shot putting etc.
