Olive’s Achievement Motivation

big courage to come to Enishte house “It was evening, the twilight gave way to blackness and a very faint snow fell as I walked down the street where Enishte Effendi lived. Unlike other evenings, I‟d come here knowing precisely what I wanted.” 154-155. It can be concluded that Olive has approach motivation to murder Elegant Effendi. Olive has murdered him because he wants to paint without fear. He does not want to end his talent as a miniaturist because of the spreading rumor. He is arrogant, reckless, enthusiastic, determined and stubborn young miniaturist. Those personality traits influence him to take a risk by murdering someone in order to gain his goal. He is a reckless person. He intentionally comes to Enishte‟s house without being invited because he really wants to see the final painting.

2. Olive’s Achievement Motivation

According to M urray, achievement “is to accomplish something difficult such as to manipulate or organize physical objects, human beings or ideas, to overcome obstacles, and to increase self- regard” as cited in McClelland, 1985, p. 46. Olive has passion in painting. He is a determined and reckless person to overcome obstacles. He faces a lot of obstacles that block his way to gain his goal. Olive has big passion of being miniaturist. He loves his work as an illuminator and dreams to be the best. Unfortunately, the rumor about the last painting which is considered as a sin has spread through Istanbul. He does not want to lose his dream because of the sin painting. He goes to Enishte‟s house to ask what has happened and to see the last painting. They say we‟ve committed an unforgivable sin by daring to draw, from the PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI perspective of a mangy street dog, a horsefly and a mosque as if they were the same size —with the excuse that the mosque was in the background— thereby mocking the faithful who attend prayers. I cannot sleep for thinking about such things. 158 He really wants to know what kind of painting that Elegant has seen. Rumors say that the painting is considered to be sin which is threatening his future to be a great miniaturist “They say there‟s one final painting in which, according to the gossip, there‟s open defiance of our religion and what we hold sacred.” 158. He believes that after seeing that final picture, he can overcome his fear and make sure that what he has done to Elegant is right and what Elegant has done is wrong. Olive reveals to Enishte “But I never saw the completed illustration. If I had seen the entire painting, I‟d have a clear conscience about denying all this foul slender.” 158. Enishte seemingly knows the purpose of O live‟s arrival. He knows what Olive‟s goal as a miniaturist. Olive persuades Enisthe to show the last painting but he rejects it. “Why is that you feel guilty?” he asked. “What‟s gnawing at your soul? Who has caused you to doubt yourself?” “…to worry that one has attacked what he knows to be sacred, after spending months merrily illustrating a book …to suffer the torments of Hell while living …if I could only see the last painting in its entirety.” “Is this what troubles you?” he said. “Is this why you‟ve come?” Suddenly panic seized me. Could he be thinking something horrendous, like I was the one who‟d killed the ill-fated Elegant Effendi? 158 Olive tries to persuade Enishte to show the final painting. He thinks by seeing that painting, he can overcome his fear which borders his belief and passion to be a great miniaturist. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI Having devoted much of the conversation to flattery, I was anticipating that Enishte Effendi would show me the two-page illustration and put me at ease. Why didn‟t he realize this was the only way I might overcome my fears about being mired in sin? 159 Due to Olive‟s enthusiasm in this project, Olive invites Enishte to continue the illustration together but he rejects it. Enishte has chosen Black to be his partner. Black becomes Olive‟s obstacle because he cannot continue to illustrate using Venetian style with Enishte. Olive is a sensitive and prejudiced person. As a result, he feels that Enishte tries to insult him by saying an incisive statement. “let‟s continue to illustrate our book,” I said. “Let everything continue as it always has. “there‟s a murderer among the miniaturist. I am continuing my work with Black Effendi.” Was he provoking me to kill him? 164 Enishte keeps rejecting Olive‟s persuasion. He does not want to show the final painting to him. It makes the situation to be complicated. Having caused me to bloody my hands, the final painting loomed larger in my mind, and so, resolving to see it, I went to your Enishte, who no longer summoned any of us to his house. Not only did he refuse to reveal the painting, he behaved as if nothing were the matter. 396 Achievement motive deals with strong attempts to accomplish something with good or bad feelings Braun and Linder 369. Olive tries to do everything to convince Enishte to show the final painting and he is interested in continuing the project with Enishte but he refuses him. In this situation, he has strong attempt to accomplish his purpose. This strong attempt influences him to do bad action “At that very moment, it was of course the Devil prodding me to drive that inkpot down with all my might onto this conceited old m an‟s faulty brain.” 165. In 2000, Huffman, Vernoy, and Vernoy revealed that achievement PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI motivation is “the need for success, for doing better than others, and for mastering challenging tasks” p.399. After I killed the miserable excuse of a man, discounting the trembling in my hands which lasted only a few days, I drew better, I made use of brighter and bolder colors, and most important, I realized that I could conjure up wonders in my imagination. 101 John Jung 1978 also stated that “we are not content merely to perform tasks, but rather we strive for certain standards of mastery, accomplishment, and achievement of doing them” p. 135. Extrinsic motivation can affect achievement motivation. In 2000, Huffman et al. stated that “extrinsic motivation is the desire to perform an act because of external rewards or avoidance of punishment” p.377. Olive has killed Elegant because he actually does not want to be punished by the Ezurumis and saves the workshop. He says “This deed,” I said, recognizing that I couldn‟t use the word “murder,” “I committed this deed not only for us, to save us, but for the salvation of the entire workshop.” 395. Olive is a tricky person. He does everything to save his life, future, and career. In conclusion, Olive has achievement motive to overcome his fear through seeing the final picture. He fearlessly comes to Enishte‟s house and begs him to show that painting. He is a sensitive person. When Enishte refuses to show the painting and to work with him, he is offended. He decides to kill Enishte to achieve his purpose. Olive also has extrinsic motivation which leads him to kill Elegant. He wants to avoid the punishment from the Ezurumis.
