Olive’s Harmavoidance Motivation

b. Olive’s Harmavoidance Motivation

Harmavoidance motivation is a need to escape from fear such as Fear of sickness, pain, d eath, and other dangerous situations. Fear is “an aversive state of organism aroused by stimuli that signal a future aversive event” Beck, 1978, p. 184. Olive is full of fear because of Elegant. He really needs to escape from his fear because he is not comfortable with him. He needs to keep his life and career in countenance. Olive is a reckless and tricky person. As the result, Olive silences the trouble maker‟s mouth by killing him. If I hadn‟t silenced him, he would‟ve denounced as unbelievers Enishte Effendi, all the miniaturists and even Master Osman, letting the rabid followers of the Hoja of Ezurum have their way with them. If someone succeeded in announcing that the miniaturists were committing blasphemy, these followers of Ezurumi —who are looking for any excuse to exercise their strength —wouldn‟t just be satisfied with doing away with the master miniaturists. They‟d destroy the entire workshop and Our Sultan would be helpless to do anything but watch without a peep. 122 It can be concluded that Olive murders people because he is influenced by social motive especially aggression and harmavoidance motive. He murders Elegant and Enisthe because he is frustrated. He decides to murder Elegant otherwise his career and the society of miniaturist is in danger. He murders Enishte because of his frustration. He cannot persuade Enishte to show the last painting and he is afraid because Enishte realized he is the murderer. He also needs to escape from his own fear.
