Olive’s Emotional motivation

3. Olive’s Emotional motivation

According to Young, emotion can be aroused by negative feelings and positive feelings as cited in Jung, 1978, p. 291. Olive is a prejudiced person. Olive has bad feeling about Elegant. He thinks that Elegant is going to endanger the miniaturist. He says “I couldn‟t let the false accusations of one foolhardy man endanger the entire society of miniaturists.” 15. Olive has bad feeling about Elegant‟s reaction. Elegant says that the picture he has made is a desecration. At that time, Olive‟s emotion appears. “You acknowledge the picture you‟ve made is in fact a desecration, don‟t you?” he said innocently. “It‟s heresy, a sacrilege that no decent man would have the gall to commit. You‟re going to burn in the pits of hell. Your suffering and pain will never diminish —and you‟ve made me an accomplice.” As I listen to him, I sensed with horror how his word had such strength and gravity that, willingly or not, people would heed them, hoping that they would prove true about miserable creatures other than themselves … But finally I hardened my heart; he was prepared to confess everything to everyone. 19 If Elegant confesses what he has known and seen, Nusret Hoja‟s followers are going to endanger the miniaturist. He says “If one of Nusret Hoja‟s followers hears such an allegation, nothing will remain of us or the book- arts workshop” 21. In Enishte‟s house, Olive has a bad feeling that Enishte realizes if one of miniaturist who is working on his project is a murderer. In Olive‟s mind, he thinks that “He had, of course, guessed that the murderer who did away with brainless Elegant Effendi was one of us who were embellishing his book.” 100 Emotion of fear can be produced by nearly sudden and intense stimulus PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI Edward J. Murray, 1964, p. 51. Olive is a prejudiced and sensitive person. These personalities create fear within himself. Olive is fear of having sin and being killed because of the project given by Enishte. Therefore, he blames another to hide his mistake. “I acknowledge very well what I feel. I‟m suffering the torments of the grave without having died. Unawares, we‟ve sunk to our necks in sin because of you, and now you‟re preaching more courage. You‟re the one who‟s made me a murderer. Nusret Hoja‟s rabid henchmen will kill us all.” 167 Olive thinks every bad condition which is going to happen. By showing a bit emotion, he blames Enisthe to hide his fear. Though I was as certain of this as I could be, I was in a panic while rendering the horse. Had I done something incriminating when I made the horse for Enishte? I had to depict a new horse this time. I thought of completely different things. I “restrained” myself and become another. 279 Shaver, Schwartz, Kirson, and O‟Connor stated that “fear is the emotional state that results when we interpret events as potentially harmful or threatening to the self; it most commonly involves the anticipation of physical harm, loss, or failure” as cited in Worchel Shebilske‟s, 1989, p. 436. According to Goodenough, “the typical cause of anger is frustration— anything that interferes with some goal- directed activity” as cited in Aiken, 1969, p. 141. Olive is frustrated because Enisthe does not believe in him anymore. There is nothing else he can do. He is unhappy and begins to be angry. There was no longer any way for me to be happy and hopeful. I could only be smart and sarcastic. Behind these two always entertaining jinns — intelligence and sarcasm —I sensed the presence of the devil, who controlled them, overcoming me. 164 In 1964, Edward J. Murray stated that anger is another emotion that may PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI be produced by certain situation on an innate basis p. 52. On the other hand, Saberi Roy 2009 stated that anger is a feeling of displeasure and pain which have negative social consequences. Olive does not like Enishte‟s reaction. Enishte begins to be fearful but he hides his fear by considering that what he is doing is not contrary to the religion. “Your Enishte was murdered because he was afraid,” I said. “just like you, he‟d begun to claim the illustration, which he was doing himself, wasn‟t contrary to the religion or the sacred book… this was exactly the pretext sought by the Erzurumis, who were desperate to find an aspect contrary to the religion. Elegant Effendi and your Enishte were a perfect match for each other.” 393 Olive is angry with Enishte because he is being humiliated by Enishte. Due to his emotion, he directly confesses that he has killed Elegant. I thereupon confessed that I was the one who killed Elegant Effendi and tossed him into a well. Yes, then he took me more seriously, but he continued to humiliate me all the same. How could a man who humiliates his son be a father? 396 It can be summed up that Olive has emotion motives both fear and anger. He has killed Elegant Effendi because he is prejudiced person and he is scared if Elegant is going to confess to Nusret Hoja‟s followers who can endanger the society of miniaturists especially for his career. He also has killed Enishte because he is angry with him. Enisthe starts to be afraid of what he is doing whereas Olive is interested and enthusiastic in this project.
